Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and I'm a very proud grandma.
I write stories for my grandchildren and I'm very happy to share them with you too.
So make yourself comfortable because my next story is about to begin.
Blue earns a treat.
It was a beautiful late summer's afternoon and Fiona decided to go for a ride on Blue at the seaside.
They didn't live far from the beach and Fiona knew that Blue thoroughly enjoyed galloping through the sand and sea.
Would you like me to make a picnic for you to take with you?
Suggested her mum.
Oh yes please!
Said Fiona as she realised it was nearly tea time.
Together they made a delicious picnic.
An egg mayonnaise sandwich,
A handful of walnuts,
An apple for Fiona and one for Blue,
Some carrot sticks and a slice of brownie cake her mum had made the night before.
With Blue saddled up ready,
Fiona packed the yummy goodies into her saddlebag along with plenty of water and then set off.
They rode along the country lanes which were very quiet.
Fiona enjoyed seeing the birds in the hedgerows and the late summer flower blooms which were still looking so pretty.
As they arrived at the beach,
Many people were leaving having already enjoyed their day in the sunshine.
Fiona breathed in the sea air.
Blue seemed to do the same as he lifted his head high and snorted the air.
Isn't it gorgeous here?
Said Fiona smiling the happiest smile.
The beach was virtually empty by now except for a few people.
An elderly couple walked hand in hand to the sand as they enjoyed each other's company while they strolled across the sand.
A man with his dog walked near the water's edge.
The dog seemingly enjoying chasing the waves as they rolled in and out.
Further in the distance,
A young family appeared to be enjoying the warm sea air as they played in the sand building sand castles.
It was beautiful here with the ragged rocks and golden sand stretching as far as the eye could see.
The seagulls enjoyed the warm thermals as they glided effortlessly upon them high above the sea.
Fiona galloped Blue across the sand,
Each enjoying the sense of freedom it gave them.
Blue's mane flew out as the wind rushed through it and his legs stretched out as he proudly carried Fiona comfortably upon his back.
They rode as one on and on from one side of the beach to the other.
Eventually they arrived at the end of the beach where there was a cove,
A small sheltered bay.
A rock had been transformed into a perfect seat carved by the waves washing over it for many,
Many years.
Fiona decided this was the perfect place to enjoy her picnic.
She dismounted from Blue and unpacked her food and water from the saddlebag.
She gave Blue some carrot sticks before she settled upon the rock seat and tucked into her sandwiches.
It was really peaceful here and Fiona enjoyed the calm sound of the waves as they lapped the shore.
Her sandwiches finished,
She ate a few walnuts and then offered Blue the apple she had bought for him.
Blue loved apples but in his excitement to grab it from Fiona he accidentally knocked it from her hand and it fell into the sand.
Oh Blue,
Laughed Fiona,
You are so clumsy sometimes.
I will have to wash the sand from it before you can eat it.
She bent down to pick the apple up.
As she grabbed it something in the sand glistened and caught her eye.
She moved the sand away and uncovered a beautiful ring.
Picking it up she saw it was a simple gold band with three tiny diamonds set into it on one side.
The ring looked well worn and probably had been well loved by its owner.
Fiona put the ring into her pocket and poured some of the bottled water over the apple,
Washing away the gritty sand.
Here Blue,
She said,
Holding the apple a little more securely for her horse,
Now take your time and be gentle.
Blue slowly parted his big lips,
Showing his massive teeth and then gently took the apple from Fiona.
Successful this time he happily chomped the fruit into tiny pieces.
Fiona was about to sit down and enjoy her own apple when she heard giggles behind her.
She turned around just as two little girls came running up to her with their mum trying her best to keep up with them.
Hello,
Said Fiona,
Just as the smallest of the girls ran into Fiona's leg and immediately plopped to the ground on her bottom.
Oh careful,
Said Fiona,
Worried the girl may have hurt herself.
She's okay,
Said the older girl,
She keeps falling over especially when she tries to run.
She only learned to walk a few days ago.
Her name is Alicia and my name is Autumn.
Sorry about my daughters,
Said their mum,
Coming over and picking Alicia up from the sand.
They're sometimes too friendly for their own good.
That's okay,
Said Fiona,
It's lovely to meet you all.
My name's Fiona and this is my horse Blue.
My name's Jody,
Said the girl's mum,
Standing Alicia up and brushing the sand from her clothes.
Both girls love horses.
It's my birthday today,
Said Autumn.
I'm nine and Alicia is still only one.
Happy birthday,
Said Fiona.
Have you ever ridden on a horse?
No,
Replied Autumn.
You have ridden on a donkey at the beach a few weeks ago,
Jody reminded her.
But a donkey is not a horse,
Said Autumn,
So that doesn't count.
Fiona smiled at Jody,
Liking the confidence and positivity in the young girl.
Would you like to ride on Blue for a birthday treat,
Asked Fiona.
Oh can I mummy,
Asked Autumn,
Looking up pleadingly at her mum.
Of course,
Said Jody.
That's very kind of you,
Fiona.
My pleasure,
Said Fiona.
Blue loves giving people rides.
Fiona lifted Autumn onto Blue's saddle.
Are you comfortable,
She asked the little girl.
Oh yes,
Thank you,
Said Autumn.
Suddenly,
Alicia started shouting,
Me,
Me,
Me,
As she pointed up to where her sister was sitting on Blue.
No,
Alicia,
Said Jody,
You're too little.
But Alicia wasn't going to give up.
Me,
Me,
Me,
She shouted even louder.
I could sit her in front of Autumn if that's OK with you,
Jody,
Suggested Fiona,
Not liking seeing Alicia so anxious.
I'll hold her tightly,
Mummy,
Said Autumn reassuringly.
OK,
Agreed Jody.
Fiona lifted Alicia up and sat her carefully in front of Autumn.
The girls were small enough to fit snugly into Blue's seat together,
Which helped to hold them securely in place.
With the girls settled,
Fiona took hold of Blue's reins.
Hold on tight,
She said.
Grip with your legs and here we go.
Fiona walked Blue slowly along the beach with Jody walking beside her.
The girls were as quiet as mice.
I think they're quiet because they have never been on a horse this big before,
Explained Jody.
But they are always excited when they see horses and often asked to ride one.
They walked with Blue and watched the girls smile as they began to relax and enjoy their ride.
Alicia began to giggle as her little hand reached out to touch Blue's mane.
She giggled louder as Blue raised his head up in response to the little fingers as they brushed his neck.
This is so fun,
Said Autumn.
We are really high up.
I can see the ships out at sea,
She said,
Pointing towards the ocean.
Where do you live,
Jody?
Asked Fiona.
I haven't seen you around here before.
That's because we don't live here,
Replied Jody.
We are on holiday,
Staying with my Aunt Katie.
Oh,
I know her,
Said Fiona.
I've met her a few times,
Although she tends to keep herself to herself.
Yes,
Agreed Jody.
She has become a bit of a recluse since my uncle passed away last year.
She misses him a lot.
Well,
It must be difficult when you have been together with someone for so long,
Said Fiona.
They were married for over 50 years,
Said Jody.
We did convince her to walk with us this morning.
She brought us here to this cove.
She didn't want to take another walk with you this afternoon then,
Asked Fiona.
No,
Said Jody.
She has a migraine and needed to rest.
So I thought I'd bring the girls here again as they enjoyed it so much this morning,
To give my Aunt peace and quiet for a while.
She checked her watch.
Oh,
I didn't realise how long we have been gone.
I guess we should start getting back.
It's nearly time for the girls to get ready for bed.
Yes,
I should be getting back too,
Said Fiona.
I haven't got far to go.
I live just over there,
By the big field,
She said,
Pointing yonder up the hill.
Fiona stopped Blue and carefully lifted the girls off.
What do you say to Fiona and Blue,
Girls?
Asked Jody.
Thank you so much,
Autumn said,
And Alicia tried to repeat her sister's words.
You are very welcome,
Said Fiona.
Blue had a lovely time with you.
Bye,
Fiona,
Said Jody.
Thank you for making my girls happy.
They all said goodbye.
Then Fiona rode Blue back to the cove to gather up her bits from her picnic before heading home.
The next day,
As Fiona was grooming Blue,
She heard a familiar sound.
Turning round,
She saw Autumn and Alicia running excitedly up to her,
With their mum following behind.
Hello,
Girls,
Said Fiona.
How lovely to see you again.
Hello,
Fiona,
Said Jody.
Hello,
Jody.
This is a nice surprise,
Said Fiona happily.
The girls wanted to draw you a picture to say thank you for taking them for a ride on Blue yesterday,
Explained Jody.
Here you are,
Said Autumn,
Handing Fiona a piece of paper.
It's a picture of you and Blue.
Fiona looked at the paper and was amazed how good the drawing was.
Wow,
This is wonderful,
She said.
You're quite an artist,
Autumn.
Thank you,
Said Autumn proudly.
I love drawing.
Alicia has drawn the grass at the bottom.
She pointed to the squiggly lines across the bottom of the page.
Me,
Me,
Me,
Shouted Alicia,
Pointing from the picture to herself multiple times.
I love it,
Said Fiona.
Thank you.
Come on,
Then,
Said Jody.
Let's not take up any more of Fiona's time.
Are you going somewhere nice today?
Asked Fiona.
We're going back to the beach,
Said Jody.
When my aunt woke up this morning,
She noticed she had lost her engagement ring,
Which caused another migraine to start.
She thinks she may have lost it near the cove when we were there yesterday morning.
She remembers twisting it around on her finger as she recalled the special time she had spent at the beach with my uncle.
Oh,
I found a ring yesterday,
Said Fiona,
Suddenly remembering the diamond ring still in her pocket.
She pulled it out and passed it to Jody.
I completely forgot I found this near the cove just before you and the girls arrived,
She explained.
This is her ring,
Exclaimed Jody.
My aunt will be so thankful.
She thought it was buried in the sand and gone forever.
I cannot thank you enough,
Fiona.
Oh,
It's not me you need to thank,
Said Fiona.
It's blue.
If he hadn't knocked his apple out of my hand,
I would never have been looking down in the sand.
It's wonderful how things happen,
Jody thanked Blue.
Can we give him some of our treats,
Mum?
Asked Autumn,
Taking a small box of raisins from her pocket.
Yes,
He will like those,
Said Fiona.
Alicia tried to pull her box of raisins from her pocket,
All the while shouting,
Me,
Me,
Me,
As her mum helped her.
Fiona showed the girls how to hold their hand out flat,
Palm up,
And place the raisins on top so Blue could carefully take them.
He's so gentle,
Said Autumn,
After feeding Blue exactly as Fiona had instructed.
He is truly a gentle giant,
Said Jody,
In more ways than one.
I believe we were meant to meet.
It's almost magical how things happen when we allow them to,
Said Fiona.
As long as we don't panic,
But simply enjoy life,
We will see the signs and things we are meant to find.
Plus,
Be in places we are meant to be,
And meet people who we are meant to meet,
Said Jody,
Hugging Fiona.
I couldn't agree more,
Agreed Fiona.
Blue enjoyed the last of his treats,
And then Jody and her girls said their goodbyes.
I can't wait to see my aunt's face when I give her ring back to her,
Jody said.
I'm so happy we found it for her,
Said Fiona,
Patting Blue fondly on his neck.
And I'm just as happy I met you girls,
She said,
As she moved to hug Autumn and Alicia.
Can we have one more ride on Blue before we go?
Asked Autumn.
No,
Autumn,
Said Jody,
We have taken up too much of Fiona's time as it is.
You are far too cheeky to ask such a thing.
If she doesn't ask,
She doesn't know,
Said Fiona,
Laughing,
And I really don't mind giving them another ride on Blue.
If you're sure,
Said Jody,
Grateful for Fiona's generosity.
Come on,
Girls,
Said Fiona,
You can help me get Blue ready and then we'll go and ride on the beach again.
And that's how they spent the next few hours,
Each one happy and appreciating the joys of life.
And Blue adored every moment with the girls and enjoyed the warm feeling of love he felt from them.
Thank you for listening to my story.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Before you go,
I'd like to ask you a question.
Have you ever found a piece of treasure on the beach?
Thanks again for listening and come back soon to hear another story from Grandma.
Bye for now.
Thanks again.
