Hello,
Awake and creative,
So glad we can share this space.
Take a moment,
Settle yourself in,
Get that deep first breath,
Let all your tension soften,
And all those hurried thoughts quiet.
Today we're going to explore a theme that resonates deeply with anyone on a creative path,
A journey we all navigate,
The shift from constantly looking outside ourselves for affirmation,
Understanding,
Or assessment,
To cultivating an unwavering self-belief that springs from within.
How many of you,
Perhaps right now,
Or at least some point along your creative journey,
Have felt that strong pull to look outside yourself?
You crave someone else's opinion,
Or approval,
Or their go-ahead.
It's a very human experience,
Isn't it?
We look to external sources for various reasons,
And initially this can be very beneficial.
We might seek permission.
Is it okay for me to pursue this?
Do I have the right to call myself an artist,
A writer,
A musician,
A creator?
Often we carry old narratives,
Or societal expectations that tell us creativity is a luxury,
Or only for special people.
We might unconsciously wait for someone else to say,
Yes,
You can,
You are allowed,
Permission,
Or perhaps validation.
Am I on the right track?
Does this resonate with anyone else?
We pour our heart into something,
And then naturally,
We want to know if it connects,
If it's good.
We look for that nod,
That comment,
That external reflection that tells us our efforts are worthwhile.
Validation.
How about direction?
Where do I even begin?
What tools do I need?
What is the next step?
Especially when we're starting a new creative venture,
The path can feel murky.
We consult experts,
Read books,
Take courses.
All of these offer invaluable guidance from those who have walked a similar path.
Direction.
Think of it like a young sapling.
When it's just planted,
It often needs a stake to grow straight and strong,
To protect it from the wind until its roots can firmly grip that earth.
These external supports,
A mentor's advice,
A peer's encouragement,
A teacher's guidance,
Can give us a crucial foothold,
A starting point,
And help us feel less alone in our creative endeavors.
There is nothing inherently wrong with this initial reliance.
It's a natural phase of growth.
However,
There comes a critical juncture,
A turning point,
Where relying solely or even primarily on these external sources can actually become a significant creative roadblock.
If we constantly wait for someone else to give us the green light,
To tell us we're ready,
We risk getting caught in a subtle yet powerful trap.
What does that trap look like?
It can manifest as stagnation.
We never truly start,
Or we stop dead in our tracks,
The moment that external affirmation isn't immediately present.
If we only create when praised,
What happens when the praise stops?
Or worse,
When criticism arrives?
Our creative flow becomes dependent on something outside our control.
Rather than flowing freely from within,
Loss of authenticity.
When our primary goal is external validation,
We might unconsciously begin to twist our creative vision to fit what we think others want,
Rather than what truly calls to us.
We might create for the market,
Instead of from the heart.
Our unique voice can get muffled,
Trying to echo what we perceive as popular or acceptable.
The truly impactful,
Groundbreaking work often comes from a place of deep,
Uncompromised self-expression,
Not from chasing trends or approval,
Or disempowerment.
This is perhaps the most insidious aspect.
When we constantly seek external approval,
We are in essence handing over our creative agency.
We are saying,
My worth,
My direction,
My creative impulse,
Is in your hands.
We then become a passenger in our own creative vehicle,
Rather than the driver.
The profound truth is this,
The outside world,
As supportive and wonderful as it can be,
Cannot give us self-belief.
It offers feedback,
Encouragement,
Even constructive criticism.
But it cannot instill the deep,
Quiet conviction that resides within us.
No one else can define your worth,
Or tell you if your unique creative spark is valid.
That has to come from you.
And here's another crucial point.
The outside world cannot hand you your path.
No one can tell you exactly your own unique creative journey will unfold.
They haven't walked your exact steps.
They haven't seen through your unique lenses.
They don't possess your specific combination of experiences,
Passions,
And inner wisdom.
To wait for someone to illuminate a perfectly paved road for you,
Is to wait forever.
Because that road,
Your road,
Is being built with each step you take.
So if we step away from the endless search for external validation,
Where do we turn?
This is where we shift our focus inward,
To embrace our inner compass.
At some point,
The most powerful and sustainable fuel for our creative journey is simply the pure,
Undeniable desire to go after this thing,
This creativity,
This calling.
It's in no way about perfection,
Or talent as defined by others.
It's about that inner spark,
That deep longing,
That quiet voice that says,
I must create.
I must express this.
I must explore this idea.
It's about leaning into the inherent confidence that is already a part of who you are,
Even if it feels buried under layers of doubt or past rejection.
Consider this.
The path doesn't reveal itself before you walk.
The profound truth is that we walk,
And the path opens.
Each step,
Each creative act,
No matter how small or seemingly imperfect,
Reveals the next part of the journey.
You sketch,
And an idea for a painting emerges.
You write a single sentence,
And the next paragraph begins to form.
You experiment,
And a new technique presents itself.
This is a beautiful,
Dynamic process.
This active engagement,
This walking,
Beautifully exposes the organic connection between our internal drive and determination and what comes to us.
The unexpected insights,
The serendipitous encounters,
The resources that suddenly appear,
The aha moments.
It's not a pre-planned route.
It's co-creation between your inner world and the external world,
With your inner world leading the dam.
You are not waiting for the world to confirm your capability.
You are confirming it to yourself through action.
This leads us to perhaps the most empowering realization.
We are completely,
Entirely equipped and supplied from within.
Within you resides the resilience to navigate setbacks.
The problem-solving ability to overcome creative blocks.
The unique perspective that only you possess.
And an inherent creative capacity that is your birthright.
You don't need someone to give you these things.
You simply need to access and trust them.
In the end,
We make something of something.
We take raw material,
Whether it's an abstract idea,
A blank canvas,
A set of disparate notes,
A feeling,
Or a life experience,
And through our unique internal process,
Our specific alchemy,
We transform it into something meaningful.
Something that reflects our authentic selves,
Our unique voice,
And our personal truth.
You are not just a vessel for creativity.
You are the source,
The shapeshifter,
The one who brings the invisible into form.
Let's bring this all together.
We started by acknowledging the natural human tendency to seek external validation for our creative endeavors.
A tendency that can serve us initially.
But we've also seen how,
At a certain point,
True power and sustainable growth come from shifting our focus inward.
It's about trusting that pure,
Unadulterated desire,
Recognizing that the path unfolds as we walk it,
And knowing with deep conviction that we are inherently equipped and supplied from within to create what we are called to create.
As you go forward from this moment into your creative endeavors this week,
Or simply into your day,
I invite you to gently notice.
Where might you still be seeking external permission?
Where might you be waiting for someone else to validate your worth or your idea?
And then,
After that noticing,
With kindness and compassion for yourself,
Gently bring your awareness back to that inner spark.
What is the deepest desire within you that yearns to be expressed?
What's one small,
Authentic step you can take today,
Purely from that place of inner trust,
Without waiting for external validation?
Let's take a moment now to simply sit.
If you feel comfortable,
Gently close your eyes,
Or at least soften your gaze.
Place a hand over your heart.
Feel the gentle rhythm of your breath.
Connect with that core of pure desire within you.
That creative impulse that needs no external permission.
Feel the strength.
The knowing.
The quiet readiness to create that resides there.
Breathe into this feeling of innate confidence.
This deep well of resourcefulness that is uniquely yours.
Thank you for sharing this creative space and this journey of introspection with me today.
May your inner compass guide you powerfully with clarity and confidence on your unique and beautiful creative path.
And remember,
The path opens as you walk it,
And you are already equipped with everything you need.
Until next time,
Keep creating,
Keep trusting,
And keep shining.
Awake and creative today.
