Your brain forms connections between neurons, called synapses, as you interact with your environment. The young brain does this particularly well, allowing for cognitive development. Over time, these connections become automatic patterns that can influence your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. To change limiting patterns, you must become aware of them and actively engage in new thoughts. By challenging and replacing old patterns, you can form new connections and strengthen different neural pathways in your brain. With repeated practice, these new pathways become more established, allowing for new and more beneficial patterns of thinking and behaving.

Just like learning to ride a bike, it may feel awkward initially, but you will improve with practice.
