According to the World Health Organization- By 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be aged 60 years or over. By 2050, the world’s population of people aged 60 years and older will double (2.1 billion). If you’re listening to this, you’re aging. In every moment spent living and breathing on this planet, you, we, are aging. Just because we live in an aging society, we do not need to live in an ageist society. Ageism is considered the last acceptable 'ism' and one that will likely affect us all. Let's reframe ageism so that we can all age with dignity and respect. In this course, we will discuss ageism as a bias, identifying how ageism can show up in various environments and consider ways to challenge ageism. We will also briefly touch on mistreatment of older adults because when ageism can lead to mistreatment- this brief class will help you recognize possible signs and identify possible resources to help.
Jessie considers herself an expert in aging for a few reasons, including that she, herself, is aging. In addition to her own life experience, she has been working in the aging field for the last seventeen years- working to help keep vulnerable adults safe from mistreatment. Over the last decade, she has trained hundreds of professionals about...

Ageism As A Bias
Ageism is referred to as the 'last acceptable ism.' This brief session sets the foundation of ageism as a bias and how bias can sometimes lead to prejudice or discrimination. Ageism can be obvious but it is often insidious as it is normalized in our culture showing up in behaviors of children as young as three years old.

Ageism is Everywhere: When You Know How to Recognize It
Ageism is referred to as the 'last acceptable ism.' In the last session, we set the foundation to understand what ageism is and how it is a bias. This session will provide examples of how ageism shows up in the health care/medical fields, in our workplaces and society at-large. Some suggestions about how to challenge ageist behaviors will be shared with more to follow in the last class of this course.

Ageism Can Lead to Mistreatment
When someone renders another as 'less-than' or unworthy, which 'ism attitudes do, they are likely to be mistreated. It is easier for others to justify their poor behavior when they engage in ageist attitudes or behaviors. 1 in 10 older adults report that they have been mistreated/abused and for every one case of abuse reported, twenty-four go unreported. Ageism can lead to prejudice or discrimination of older adults. If you hear someone using ageist comments about someone they care for, this is a pink flag. There are additional indicators could add up to something more. Each state and most countries have organizations that can assist if you have concerns someone is being mistreated. *Trigger Warning: Please note that this particular class discusses mistreatment/abuse of older adults. Please skip this class if this topic is difficult to hear.

Challenging Ageism
Ageism is referred to as the 'last acceptable 'ism and it exists everywhere. This course offers a few ideas about how to challenge ageist attitudes and behaviors. Aging is a privilege and should be honored as such. As long as we are living and breathing on this planet, we are aging. When we consider the alternative, why is there such negativity around aging? Let's stop shaming each other about aging and celebrate it.

It's a big battle really but taking small steps, starting with my own attitude was a kick in the butt for me. Thank you for sharing this really useful information.

This was a terrific and enlightening course. I'm 82 and guilty of jokes about aging about myself and friends. I vow to reframe my attitude and speech. Thank you for delivering this.
