Dependent Origination 6: The Hit (Contact)

This is the sixth link of Dependent Origination: contact. The Hit. Your phone buzzes and your heart spikes before you've even read a word. That's contact — sense, object, and awareness colliding in a single moment, and the body always answers first. Faster than thought. Faster than choice.
This track slows that collision down: the notification, the headline, the tone in somebody's voice — and the exact half-second where a reaction gets born. You can't stop contact. The world is going to keep touching you. But between the hit and what you do next there is one breath of space, and that breath is where the chain can break.

Somebody can say one thing to you. And your whole day changes. Sometimes. It hurts. Sometimes it's the best news you've had in a while. And sometimes it's just another sound in the room. Three different moments. But something happens in all three. Contact. Before we get into it. Feel your feet on the floor. Notice your hands. Let the jaw loosen. Drop those shoulders a little. If you're comfortable. Take three slow breaths with me. If not. . . Stay with your feet. In for four. Alpha 6. In for four. Alpha 6. One more. In for four. Alpha 6. All right? Let's talk. We're walking through the 12 links of dependent origination. The fog. The groove. Lock in. The whole setup. The six open doors. Now we're at chain six. Vasa. Contact. I call it The Hit. Here's how the Buddha explained it. There's an ear. There's a sound. And there's ear consciousness. The hearing of that sound. When those three come together. That's ear contact. Eyes meet what we see. The nose. What we smell. The tongue. What we taste. The body. What we feel through touch. And the mind is a sense door too. A thought. An image. A memory. I can meet those two. Say somebody calls your name from the kitchen. You hear it. That's contact. Maybe it's said with love. And feels good. Maybe they're angry. And it feels unpleasant. Is just your name. Nothing special about it. Pleasant. Unpleasant. Neither one. That's Feeling Tone. Is the next link. Vedana. Contact conditions, Feelings. They're closely connected. But they're not the same thing. I've seen that in my whole life. I had an argument with someone I spent nearly 20 years with. Some of those words hurt. And afterward. I lay down. I had work to do. But my mind kept going back to it. Part of me kept saying. That's not who I am. Another part kept asking. But what if she's right? Now catch this. The conversation was over. Those words weren't being said anymore. But the memory came back. And my mind met those words again. First words reach the ear. The replay kept meeting the mind. That's mind contact. And the hurt that followed was real. But contact isn't only about pain. I was there with my son. Took his driver's test. Examiner. Was going over a few things he got wrong. Then he said, Past. I was happy for my son. I heard those words. Enjoy Falun. Even now. That memory brings some joy back. You see what I'm saying? Two very different moments. Contact was part of both. Let's try something simple. Keep your eyes open if you want. Feel the chair holding you. Or your feet on the floor. For a sound that's already there. A fan. Car outside. A bird. Whatever you hear. There's the sound. There's hearing. That's the meeting. If it's quiet. Feel your hands rusting. That's body contact. Does it feel pleasant? Unpleasant. Or not much either way. If a thought comes up. That's something the mind is meeting. No need to bring up anything painful. Just notice. What's already happening. Stay with that for a little while. Alright. Maybe you heard something and moved on. Maybe the mind started talking about it. Maybe you noticed a feeling. No need to make it a big thing. We're not trying to stop life from reaching us. We're learning to see what happens when it does. And remember. Some of those moments are beautiful. Kind voice. A familiar laugh. Your kid hearing. Your past. Let's say it once more. You the ground. Hear what's here. If something comes up. Let yourself notice it. That's enough for now. Here's the point. The meeting is not the whole story. Today. Notice when something reaches you. Notice how it feels.
