This talk centers on bringing creativity into everyday life and how taking small opportunities to see creativity in everyday life can have a big impact in our lives.
I will be sharing a simple exercise you can try in your daily life to practice incorporating creativity in a small yet powerful moment.
Over the past several decades as a creative person,
Not only in the performing arts,
But also in the healing arts,
I have used creativity to support,
Challenge,
Grow,
And transform my everyday experience.
From how I get dressed,
To how I drive,
To how I cultivate relationships with others,
Each of these areas and more have been imbued with so much creativity it has become second nature to me.
Before I share the exercise,
I want to speak a bit more about creativity itself.
Many people believe creativity to be something that only an elite group of people possess,
Or that creativity is a special gene that you are either born with or not.
I would like to dispel that myth and share that everyone is creative.
However,
Creativity is like a muscle in your body that needs to be flexed and used regularly so you can access it with more ease whenever you want.
Creativity is a present moment experience.
Creativity helps us show up in our life,
It helps us navigate life,
And it helps us bring more joy and happiness to our everyday experience.
The simple exercise I'd like to share is called the art of getting dressed.
I'll share a few prompts for you to think about the next time you get dressed.
The art of getting dressed is about bringing creativity into this process with intention and invitation.
The next time you are standing in your closet or over your laundry basket or at your dresser,
Before you grab for clothing,
Take a moment to breathe.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Notice your body in the space and ask yourself,
How do I want to feel today?
Give yourself permission to trust whatever word or image arises.
Some words that may arise might be comfortable,
Powerful,
Sexy,
Strong,
Playful,
Bright,
Safe,
Or so many others.
Once you have your words or images,
Allow yourself to choose an outfit that brings that feeling or feelings to life just for you.
This isn't something that others may notice.
This is your personal experience of practicing creativity while getting dressed.
There is also no wrong way to do this.
If you put on an outfit and want to change it,
You absolutely can.
This is your art of getting dressed journey.
By taking this time to flex your creativity in an everyday activity,
You will start to see other areas where you could bring more creativity to life.
Creativity is available to everyone.
We just have to practice using it more often.
