In this practice,
We will be using a herbal inhaler or an essential oil that has a minty,
Refreshing scent like peppermint or eucalyptus.
Once you have this,
Hold it in your hand and uncap it so it is ready to use.
Allow yourself to pause,
Just as you are,
Giving yourself permission to uncurl from the day,
Just for a few moments.
As you settle,
Feel your shoulders softening away from your ears.
Notice the support of the chair or floor beneath you.
Feel the weight of your body grounding down.
Letting the earth take some of the load off.
Bring the herbal inhaler or essential oil toward your nose.
Looking toward the area of intensity,
Let your awareness focus on the scent.
Establish your anchor.
Notice the sharp,
Cooling sing of the menthol,
Peppermint,
Eucalyptus,
Whatever it may be.
It is crisp,
Cold and distinct.
This sensation is not discomfort.
It is a different channel on the radio.
For a few breaths,
Just dwell in that cool herbal space.
Let it be your safe harbor that you can return to.
Now we will move your awareness like a slow rhythmic pendulum between the loud intensity you feel and this cool anchor.
As you gently move the inhaler or essential oil away from your nose,
Very softly turn your inner gaze toward the area of intensity.
Don't dive in,
Just acknowledge it.
I see you.
Now like a pendulum gently swinging back,
Bring the inhaler or oil back to your nose.
Breathe in that sharp,
Cold air.
See on the tingling in your nostrils,
The back of the scent wash over your mind,
Resting in that icy stillness.
Now gently moving that inhaler or oil away from your nose just for a moment,
Gently glide your awareness back,
Back toward the intensity for just a moment.
And then immediately swing back to your anchor,
Bring that inhaler back to your nose.
Breathe in that invigorating scent,
Your anchor.
You are teaching your nervous system that it has the freedom to look away.
As you breathe in this cool,
Refreshing scent.
Imagine that coolness is a physical mist,
Soothing any painful or intense sensations in your body.
You aren't trying to force the pain to change.
You are simply introducing it to the cold.
Imagine this minty,
Silk-like coolness wrapping around the edges of the pain,
Softening the sharp boundaries of discomfort.
Take a slow,
Gentle breath in,
Pulling the scent deep into your lungs.
As you exhale,
Imagine the breath carrying any excess heat or loudness away from your body,
Letting it dissolve into the air.
Inhale the cool.
Exhale the heat.
Inhale the clarity.
Exhale the tension.
When you're ready,
You can gently cap your inhaler or essential oil and gently invite some movement back into your fingers,
Carrying this sense of space back into your day.
