Hey,
Everyone,
And welcome back to the podcast that exists solely to remind you that this world is full of mystery,
Magic,
And miracle.
And to this end,
I source intrepid human beings with incredible stories,
And they share those stories with you.
And John Malora,
My guest this episode,
Is no exception.
And John's had such a super cool career path.
He spent 15 years supporting NASA and elite US military units,
And then transitioned into leadership development.
So this is a human being who is comfortable using his voice and being on stage,
And it really shows in our conversation.
John is humble,
He's wise,
He's funny,
And he has stories to tell.
So let's get to it.
Here's my conversation with John Malora.
Years later,
When I became friends with the DJ.
Who was on,
Was spinning the tunes,
Which was probably a digital thing at that point in time.
But anyway,
I digress.
I told him that story.
And he just laughed and said,
And this was the tagline for the station,
Right song at the right time,
88,
Seven,
The bridge,
Right song at the right time,
He goes,
Oh,
Right song at the right time.
He said,
I remember when I played that song,
I said,
Come on,
Bill.
I said,
There's no way I said,
You've been a DJ for ever.
Like,
He goes,
No,
No,
No,
No.
He said,
I remember when I played that song that time,
Because of all my decades being a DJ,
Do you know how many times I played that song,
John,
I said,
Oh,
I have a clue.
He goes,
Once.
That was it.
Mine came after,
And this ties into what I just shared five minutes ago,
Where I said I built this tower up professionally.
I'm now in my late 20s,
Early 30s,
And it all came crashing down.
And that moment,
My early 30s was when I became so broken due to the death of one of my childhood friends and becoming a new dad and all these things and my job was pressure and I'm married and like all the things.
And it got to the point where I got so broken and I finally just.
.
.
You know,
Turn Jesus away anymore.
Yeah,
I remember I was I was so broken after my friend died.
And I just like was just standing in the bathroom one day alone in the house.
And I now see it was the Holy Spirit popped into my head.
But out of nowhere,
I hadn't prayed in like 13 years,
Maybe.
Serenity prayer popped in my head,
You know,
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can change,
The courage to change the things,
You know,
That I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
And as soon as I said the wisdom to know the difference,
After having not prayed in 13 years,
I just felt this warm sensation come over me head to foot.
And I thought,
Well,
That's weird.
I've either just lost my mind or maybe there's something to this whole God thing.
So that moment was when I got,
You know,
Just so broken that I allowed Jesus into my heart.
And that's where the proverbial scales started falling off my eyes.
And what I saw was Yeah,
God showed me,
Yes,
You've been an elite performer,
John,
Whether that's in sports,
Education.
Working with NASA and military units.
I was also an elite asshole.
I can say that on your podcast or beep it out.
But yeah,
I was an elite asshole too.
And what I was shown was,
That was the armor I was using to protect all my wounds,
That I'd rather push people away.
On my terms.
Than risk being hurt by them.
So that's when things really started changing for me,
And I've maintained that relationship with Jesus since then,
Over the past years.
I guess we're coming up on almost 20 years now.
While that the story,
You know,
The Damascus moment kind of.
I think.
A lot of the people that I've interviewed over the years,
That moment has come to them in one way or another.
And many times it arrives when you are not expecting it.
I mean,
It's like the last thing you,
You would ever,
It doesn't even enter the realm of possibility in your life.
Not only that,
It's,
It's,
When you are at your lowest and maybe most open and most broken,
Vulnerable.
I had my moment like that,
And I think.
.
.
A big part of my process of healing.
And I don't know if you'd agree with this with yours was breaking down my ego,
Which was,
Um,
You know,
I can handle this all myself.
I,
I,
But not only ego,
There's a lot of anger from childhood experiences and,
And just life,
Life,
Um,
Grief,
Sorrow.
Um,
And that's not,
These aren't things that you can just get rid of in 20 minutes or even overnight.
These are years long catharsis that you have to have whether it's going into the woods and screaming that works for some people are getting a therapist and talking.
Or,
You know,
I've been talking a lot about somatic therapy,
Having a hands on your body and people working on your muscles because memories can sometimes be lodged in the body in different places.
The body keeps the score.
It does.
Yes,
You've that book is unbelievable.
But it's it often is a multi pronged process of different things.
Oh,
Geez.
Yeah,
I mean,
The big ones have definitely been.
About saying that the prayer and having that warm sensation come over me.
You know,
The song with all the lonely people playing on the radio.
I would actually have to think about it and go look in my journal,
But it happens so much that I put Godwinks in my journal.
And it can be little things like Music is a big one for me,
Like I'll be thinking something like a song will come on.
And.
One of the big things that I teach about is.
.
.
Making sure that we're not on autopilot with things.
And making sure that we're aware,
Whatever that is.
So these synchronicities or godwinks or whatever they are,
A lot of it comes from just being aware.
And the key with being aware is not laying that awareness slide in the judgment,
Right?
Because at the intersection of judgment and awareness is where the critic loves to live.
Critical just beat the crap out of you from the inside out.
So The goal is to be aware,
But slide into that word again,
Curiosity.
And that's what I call having a seeker's mindset.
Like seeking truth,
Seeking what's next.
How could this be evolved into something else?
How can they help me evolve?
How can they help me better serve other people?
Amazing.
I think,
You know,
One of the things you have to be,
And I think this goes back to your curious mind,
And one of your superpowers is that You have to have the eyes open or the awareness to see any of this,
You know,
Whether it's.
A God wink out there or it's,
You know,
I mean,
Just saying yes to throwing children off of a,
Instead of trying to find rats that are mice that are stuck in the plumbing or what have you.
I mean,
I think having the eyes open for the opportunity,
You know,
Whether it's interior or exterior,
It's all a part of the story that's your path.
And in living into all the possibilities that you can be,
Which I think is incredibly gorgeous.
And for me,
Just seeing you and hearing your story,
It's very clear that you are living into how you're supposed to lift others up.
Help others in the world,
Be of service to others.
The path has not been an easy one.
I mean,
To put it mildly,
You know,
But you've had the courage and the conviction to keep walking the path.
And some people don't.
Some people start and then they quit and they they're like,
Oh,
A chicken over there.
Let's go look at that chicken or whatever.
But you you keep you've kept going.
And I think what a testament to who you are and your spirit and your your bravery.
So I just I want to put that out there.
Own it,
John.
Own it.
Thank you.
And I do want to point out,
A lot of it,
Yes,
I mean,
We are responsible for ourselves.
Like,
We're the only thing that we can control.
With that being said,
There is something to be said for having people alongside of us that compliment us.
So I do want to speak to those listeners out there that maybe are thinking like,
Oh,
Man,
Maybe I'm not curious.
I'm not one of these people that will just be like,
Raise their hands like like John and Kirsten and be like,
All right,
Well,
Let's let's let's give it a try.
Let's see what happens.
I want anyone who's maybe thinking less of themselves or whatever has a story about having a mindset not in alignment with that.
The world needs you too.
All right,
Like my wife and I always joke that.
We're like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich,
Right?
Like,
I'm the jelly.
I got a lot of flavor.
But I sometimes lack to bring structure to the whole picture.
My wife,
On the other hand,
Is the peanut butter,
Right?
Like she keeps it together and you know,
A straight peanut butter sandwich,
I can be like,
I kind of stick in mouth well,
Jelly sandwich,
Like it's gonna bleed through the bread,
And it's gonna be a mess,
Right?
You got to have,
You got to have that balance.
So a lot of it comes down to being aware of what you bring.
And if you're not sure,
Unless some trusted advisors and ask them,
Hey,
When you think of me,
What do you think of if you're saying,
Oh,
My gosh,
I don't have any trusted advisors,
John,
Or no one I trust,
Then start pouring in other people and being the type of friend that you would really want to be because you'll eventually attract your tribe.
And that's it,
That's a wrap on my conversation with John.
I'm so grateful he chose to come onto the podcast and share all of his stories.
The friends that we make when we are young are singular and they carry a part of us our entire lives.
And I'm so grateful that John shared his story of his friendship and shared how it suddenly became a moment for him,
A moment of divinity,
A moment of reconciliation,
A moment I mean,
There is mystery out there,
Everyone,
And I think you know it.
But if your heart is not open,
You're going to miss the mystery.
I want each and every one of you to be like John and walk around this world with your heart open.
Be ready for any sort of change,
Any sort of illumination,
Education,
Profound experience to enter your life.
And if your heart's open,
It's going to make the shift so much easier.
So be brave and walk around with an open heart.
And that will teach others to walk around with open hearts as well.
Can you imagine what that means?
It means that so very soon,
This world is going to be filled with people who are heart-centered,
Who lead with heart intelligence,
And who want,
Desperately,
To make this world a more lovely and equitable place.
You Bye!
