Self-compassion for difficult days.
Take a moment to pause.
Whatever kind of day you're having.
You don't need to fix it right now.
You don't need to figure out.
Everything that's going on.
For the next few minutes,
Simply give yourself some space to notice.
What is happening within you.
Take a slow,
Deep breath in.
And slowly.
Breathe out.
Again,
Breathing in.
And letting go.
Notice how you feel right now.
Notice where do you feel it in your body.
Maybe you're frustrated.
Disappointed.
Overwhelmed.
Anxious.
Tired.
Maybe you're carrying regret about something you said or did.
Or maybe you're simply having one of those days when everything feels harder than it should.
Whatever.
Is here.
You don't have to judge it.
Just notice.
Now pay attention to how you are talking to yourself.
What does your inner voice sound like when you're struggling?
Is it critical?
Impatient.
Demanding.
Does it tell you that you should have known better?
Done better.
Handled it differently.
Or simply been better.
If you notice that voice.
Don't try to silence it.
Instead,
Become curious about it.
Because sometimes self-criticism isn't really about helping us improve.
Sometimes it is an old strategy.
At some point,
You may have learned that being hard on yourself kept you motivated,
Kept you safe.
Helped you avoid disappointing others.
Or gave you the illusion that if you could just find everything you had done wrong,
You could prevent it from happening again.
And so the mind rehearses the same story.
I should have.
What's wrong with me?
I always do this.
I should be further along by now.
I need to remember I can't trust.
Notice if any of those thoughts feel familiar.
And if they do.
.
.
You don't have to argue with them.
You don't have to believe them either.
You can simply recognize this an old story doesn't become more true simply because you've rehearsed it many times.
Now notice.
If there is any resistance to becoming compassionate toward yourself.
You might notice thoughts like,
I don't deserve compassion.
If I'm too kind to myself,
I will become lazy.
I need to be hard on myself.
I should feel bad about this.
Or perhaps self-compassion feels uncomfortable because criticism is familiar.
While kindness feels unfamiliar.
If that's true for you,
That's okay.
You don't have to force yourself to suddenly feel warm and loving towards yourself.
Start somewhere more realistic.
Start with fairness.
You can hold yourself accountable without attacking yourself.
You can acknowledge that something needs to change without deciding that you are the problem.
You can say.
I don't like what happened and I can learn from it.
I made a mistake and I can take responsibility.
I am struggling right now and I don't need to make the struggle worse by turning against myself.
That's a compassion with accountability.
And that's different from making excuses.
So if you're having a difficult day.
Give yourself permission to stop rehearsing the old story.
You don't need to replay every mistake.
You don't need to punish yourself for what you already understand.
You don't need to keep proving that you know you were wrong.
If there is something to repair,
Repair it.
If there is something to learn,
Learn it.
If there is something to change.
Change it.
And then.
.
.
Move forward.
Take a slow breath.
And remind yourself.
I can learn without shaming myself.
I can take responsibility without attacking myself.
I can acknowledge where I am without believing this is where I will always be.
I am allowed to grow beyond an old version of myself.
Now taking the next step in your day without carrying the entire weight of your past with you.
You don't have to earn the right to move forward.
You don't have to feel completely confident first.
You don't have to feel completely healed.
You simply have permission to stop making your suffering the price.
For becoming better.
Take one more deep breath in.
And slowly release it.
And remember.
Compassion doesn't mean letting yourself down.
Off the hook.
It means giving yourself a healthier place from which to grow.
So today.
If you catch yourself slipping into the familiar pattern of self-criticism,
Pause.
Notice it.
Name it.
And remind yourself that's the old story.
I don't have to rehearse it.
I don't have to live in it.
I can choose a different response.
I can be honest with myself.
Responsible for myself.
And compassionate toward myself.
All at the same time.
Take one more final breath.
And when you're ready.
Continue with your day.
Not as someone who has everything figured out.
But as someone who is willing to keep learning.
Creep,
Keep growing!
And keep moving forward.
Namaste.
