Welcome to a meditation.
On unwritten legacies.
Designed for women who are child-free.
By choice,
Or by email.
Circumstances.
But always hold.
Find a comfortable position.
Seated or lying down.
And let your eyes close.
Or soften your gaze toward the floor.
Take a breath in.
And let it go.
Let your next few breaths begin.
Be unhurried.
In through the nose.
And out through the mouth.
There's nowhere else you need to be right now.
Nothing you need to prove,
Explain,
Or defend.
This is simply a space to rest in who you are.
I want you to notice gently if there's a story that lives in your body.
About what a woman's life is supposed to look like.
Maybe it showed up as a question from a relative.
Or a comment from a stranger.
A quiet eight.
Or maybe no ache at all.
Just other people assuming.
There should be one.
Notice that story.
Without needing to fight it right now.
Just let it be present.
Like weather passing through a room you're sitting in.
Now,
Breathing naturally,
Bring to mind the word legacy.
Let it sit there for a moment.
Notice what images arise.
Maybe children.
Maybe a family name carried forward.
That's one meaning of the word.
It's not the only one.
A legacy is anything that continues past the moment you made it.
It's anything that ripples outward.
It does not require a bloodline to be real.
Now think of a person whose life was genuinely changed because you were in it.
Not a hypothetical.
Someone real.
A friend you showed up for at 2 a.
M.
A niece or a nephew.
Who lights up when you walk in the room.
A student.
A colleague,
A stranger you helped once and never saw again.
Let their face come to mind.
If you can.
That moment did not disappear.
It's living in them right now.
In many ways,
You may never get to see.
That is a legacy.
It was written the instant it happened,
Whether or not anyone calls it that.
Now,
Think of something you have made,
Built,
Tended to,
Or protected with your hands,
Your mind,
Your care.
Might be a piece of work.
A garden?
A piece of writing.
Community you helped hold together.
Maybe a craft you practice.
Let it come into view.
Notice this did not require permission from anyone.
It exists because you decided it would.
That is not a smaller kind of creation.
It's simply a different one.
Now bring your attention to your own life,
This one singular,
Unrepeatable life you are living right now,
Today.
Not the one you were told to want.
Not the ones still being narrated by others.
Expectations,
This one.
The one only you are living in exactly this way.
For the first and only time.
Let yourself feel,
Even briefly,
That this life does not need to become someone else's origin story to matter.
It is not a waiting room for a real chapter that hasn't started.
It is the chapter.
If grief is present for a path that closed,
A circumstance you didn't choose.
Maybe a version of motherhood that isn't part of your story,
Let it be here too.
You don't have to push it away.
To also feel whole.
Both can sit in the room together.
Grief and wholeness are not opposites.
Breathing in,
Let yourself receive whatever has come from you into the world.
The kindness,
The ideas,
The steadiness you've offered others.
The person you've simply been for people who needed you.
Breathing out,
Let go of any need to justify that this is enough.
It is enough.
Not because someone gave you permission.
Because it is happening right now in this life you are actually living.
Your legacy is not unwritten because it is missing.
It is unwritten because it is still being written.
Every day in every room you enter.
Every person you touch.
Every hour you spend building a life that is entirely yours.
Unmistakably your own.
And when you're ready,
Begin to deepen your breath.
Wiggle your fingers,
Your toes.
Bring some gentle movement back into your body.
And when it feels right,
Let your eyes open.
Carrying you.
And the quiet knowledge that your life was never a placeholder.
It was always the thing itself.
You are enough and you are whole.
As you are.
