A Valentine For The Birds

This poem offers a bird’s eye view of a Valentine’s Day craft project at the Center. Every February, our elders affected by dementia made birdseed hearts to take home and hang in their yards. Made with love…and a dash of jealousy.

Transcript

We sat outside under the olive tree. Someone measured the seeds. Someone measured the syrup. Someone wanted to stir. Using spoons and fingers, Everyone pressed the sticky seeds into greased hearts. Everyone made a valentine for the birds. For the birds, Cried the man who liked to stir. And they get to fly. Under fiesta sombreros. Under the olive tree. Laughter. In many languages.
