Facing The Music Of Anxiety

Di Cheryl B. Engelhardt

Inizia il Giorno 1
Cosa imparerai
Let’s face it: When you’re feeling anxious, the last thing you may want is to listen to someone singing “ohm”. So why do we turn to audio cues to quell our anxiety? And if we don’t already, should we? What are optimal practices, both musically and not, to manage anxiety? In this seven-day series, the listener will compassionately address their struggle with anxiety, what it looks like, and go through actionable steps to reduce the effects of anxiety using music as a healing device. Through developing deeper self-awareness, self-trust, and new strategies, the listener will be able to have access to the tools to mitigate and quell anxiety for good - with or without an accompanying soundtrack.
Cheryl is a musician who received degrees in Biology and in Music from Cornell University, studied orchestration at Juilliard, then began her tenure as a performer, coach, and composer for films, ads, theater, and social justice choirs. Her chart-topping new piano/ambient album, “Luminary”, was designed for mindfulness, focus and growth. Along...

Lezione 1
Hearing Anxiety
In Day 1, we examine what anxiety looks and sounds like for us. It’s very different for everyone, so we put away the stigmas and the judgment, and we see and hear it - even love it. Anxiety is a part of us, so to fully love ourselves, we must love our anxiety. This is the day we discover how, and choose music to support this reckoning.
Lezione 2
Leaning Into Anxiety Triggers
Sometimes anxiety comes out of nowhere. Other times, there are distinct events, circumstances, or thoughts that can bring on feelings of anxiety. We examine how to identify our own triggers, so that we can meet them with compassion for ourselves. We identify different kinds of music that can help us lean into, rather than resist, feelings of anxiety.
Lezione 3
External Relief From Anxiety
Today we will discover ways to use our surroundings to help mitigate the feelings of anxiety in our body. We will explore what it means to be safe, and use all of our senses to bring our mind to a place of calm. With a focus on hearing, we will choose to listen to music that causes presence, rather than distraction.
Lezione 4
Internal Relief From Anxiety
In this session, we will discover where anxiety lives in our body. We will send it love and energy while giving it an exit strategy. We will examine our own internal environment, providing peace and calm inside of our bodies and look at what kind of music can support inward focus.
Lezione 5
Training Our Minds
Today we will do work to teach our mind new alternatives to thoughts that show up by default. We will intentionally teach our subconscious new vocabulary through the practices of gratitude, and positive “I am” affirmation statements to add to the toolbelt of quelling anxiety. We will discover how music can have a “positive” spin, and how to use that to our advantage.
Lezione 6
Connecting The Mind & Body With Music
Anxiety shows up as a communication. We can listen with our body, rather than resist it, in order to allow partnership with anxiety. The anxiety is then not a threat, rather a tool. And when we connect the mind and the body during the onslaught of anxiety, the results are peace of mind, a feeling of confidence and control, and freedom from anxiety itself. Two of the best ways to connect the mind and the body is with music and movement. Song by Victoria Angel Heart
Lezione 7
Deserving Peace Of Mind
In our final day together, we will review strategies to quell anxiety, especially those incorporating music, as well as acknowledge why we are worthy of peace and calm in our lives. We will also add one more (fun!) technique to relieve the suffering from anxiety. Deserving peace of mind is a right, not something to be earned through suffering. When we come to this realization, we are empowered, calm, and free from anxiety.
