How To Calm An Overactive Mind Before Sleep
by Indlandsis
When the body is tired but the mind keeps running, sleep can feel far away. In this short teaching, we explore why an overactive mind at night is often not a thinking problem, but the remaining momentum of the day. You’ll learn a simple breath- and body-awareness practice to help the nervous system receive signals of safety, shift from mental activity into sensory presence, and create the conditions for rest to arrive more naturally. Please note: as this practice may make you deeply relaxed, please do not listen while driving.

How to calm an overactive mind before sleep.
Have you ever noticed that your body feels exhausted,
But your mind keeps acting as if the day isn't over?
You turn off the lights,
You lie down,
You want to sleep,
Yet part of you.
.
.
Is still replaying conversations,
Solving problems,
Or preparing for tomorrow.
Most people assume they have a thinking problem.
But often what they are experiencing is simply the momentum of the day.
Your body may be ready for rest.
Your nervous system may not be there yet.
And that's an important distinction.
Many people try to force sleep.
They tell themselves to stop thinking,
To relax,
To switch off.
But sleep doesn't respond to effort.
Sleep responds to safety.
It emerges when the body receives enough signals that the day is complete.
So I'd like to share simple practices that you can try tonight.
Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly.
Take a slow breath.
In through the nose,
For 4 counts,
Then exhale gently for 6,
Allowing only the hand of the belly to move.
And the other,
Stay still.
As you continue breathing.
Allow your attention to move away from their thoughts.
And towards your sensations.
The weight of the body against the mattress.
Temperature of the room.
Notice the feeling of the blanket.
On your skin.
Don't try to relax.
Simply notice.
Because sensing and thinking are two very different modes of experience.
And often sleep begins.
When awareness moves from the analytical mind back into the sensory body.
And when you Take one more slow breath.
Ask yourself.
What if nothing else?
Needs to be solved tonight.
Just for this moment.
Allow the day to be finished.
Allow yourself to be held by the surface beneath you.
And allow rest to arrive.
In its own time.
If you find that your mind tends to stay active at night.
It made an order.
Not neat.
More ads for it,
But.
.
.
To change the rhythm.
That's one of the reasons I changed this making tracks for sleeping.
And also as the Gaia Reconnection series.
So you can change from thinking into rest.
For now.
.
.
Let is be enough.
The day is complete.
Nothing is missing.
And your only task.
Is the rest.
Sleep well.
