The five contemplations before eating may help us to maintain gratitude, mindfulness, and direction through our eating. They originate from the Thich Nhat Hanh's Plumvillage tradition. Here we recorded a mixture of different versions from webpages, books, and the plumvillage app. The beautiful photo is by Ralph (Ravi) Kayden.

Transcript

This food is a gift of the whole universe,

A gift of the earth,

The sky,

Numerous living beings and the result of much love and work.

May we eat in mindfulness and gratitude to appreciate the gift.

May we learn to recognize and transform our unwholesome states of mind,

Especially our greed and thus learn to eat and live in moderation.

May we keep compassion in our heart by eating in such a way that reduces the suffering of living beings,

Stops contributing to the climate crisis and helps to heal and preserve our precious planet.

We accept our food in order to have the energy to realize our deepest aspirations,

Such as being happy,

Serving all living beings and contributing to a happier and healthier world.
