Explore The Four Brahmavihārās - Seed Goodness In Your Life

Par Megan Hook

Ce que vous apprendrez
The Four Brahmavihārās are taught by the Buddha and found in Buddhist texts as well as non-Buddhist texts such as the Upanishads and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The Buddha taught that these positive states of lovingkindness (Mettā), compassion (Karunā), sypathetic joy (Muditā), and equanimity ( Upekkhā), seed much goodness in the life. We will dive into each one, study the near and far enemies, and also explore practices to grow our understanding of and connection to each Brahmavihārā.

Leçon 1
Explore Mettā (Lovingkindness)
Mettā in the practice of wishing others well. This practice seeds generosity and kindness. It is traditional to practice Mettā for four different types of people: people we care about, ourself, neutral people, and people with whom we have difficulty. A teaching and practice is offered in this module.
Leçon 2
Explore Karunā (Compassion)
This module explores Karunā (compassion). We will consider growing our compassion for others and also consider self-compassion, including the three-pronged model of self-compassion as defined by Kristin Neff. A teaching and practice is offered.
Leçon 3
Explore Muditā (Sympathetic Joy)
Muditā is rejoicing in the good fortune of others. During this module we seed sympathetic joy for easy people, difficult people, ourself, and neutral people. This practice allows our heart to open toward others, instead of slamming shut. A talk about Muditā and a practice is offered.
Leçon 4
Explore Upekkhā (Equanimity)
Equanimity is the ability to meet whatever is happening in life in a grounded and skillful way. I believe equanimity underpins and supports the other Brahmavihārās as well as skillful practice itself. A talk and a practice are offered.
Leçon 5
Putting It All Together
It is wonderful to tease out and explore the 4 Brahmavihārās separately, but in actuality they work together to support each other and create an underlying sense of generosity, kindness, and care for whatever and whomever we meet in life. This module connects the 4 Brahmavihārās and offers a practice.

Thank you for this course, Megan. I’ve focused on the brahmaviharas so many times individually, but not really in combination. You’ve made them really accessible, easy to understand and integrate. I look forward to exploring more deeply and grateful to you for this robust foundation. 🙏

A beautiful course presented with thoughtfulness and love. I could feel Megan’s care, compassion and wisdom behind her narration and take away a deeper sense of openness and peace at it’s conclusion. I want to add that Megan’s responsiveness in the classroom also enhanced my experience. Thank you! 🙏🏼
