In Aboriginal mythology, YawkYawk is a mysterious mermaid spirit, who lives in rivers and lakes. Some say she is similar to snakes and crocodiles. Seeing her was connecte to weather divination. She was the creator of storms and rain. In Maori mythology, Tangaroa is the god and the creator of ocean life. Tangaloa is one of the oldest Polynesian deities and in western Polynesia (for example, Samoa and Tonga) traditions has the status of supreme creator god. In eastern Polynesian cultures Tangaroa is usually considered of equal status to Tāne and thus not supreme.

Aboriginals in Australia they have their own mermaid called Yawk Yawk.

Yawk Yawk is a young woman with a fishtail.

Sometimes she's described to be half crocodile and half snake.

You might see her at nights and her hair is green and is said to look like seaweed.

Yawk Yawk is usually a young woman who can also have a fishtail.

Yawk Yawk is a water spirit.

They control water and also the rain.

Sometimes Yawk Yawk comes to the shore at night and turns into a human and their tail turns into a pair of legs.

According to some stories they can transform themselves into dragonflies.

They control the rain,

They control storms and a lot of people connect them with fertility.

If a woman wants to get pregnant they only need to go near a pool or a lake where Yawk Yawk lives and they get pregnant.

The aboriginals had sort of a reverse theory about evolution.

Darwin suggested that humans evolved from animals.

The aboriginals believed that it was the opposite,

That animals evolved from humans.

Yawk Yawk was originally a human.

According to the story the fish evolved from humans,

Yawk Yawk never completely formed itself to an animal.

So therefore the Yawk Yawk is an eternal hybrid.

Many eons ago there was a war between humans and the marine animals because the fish saw the humans as their enemies.

And according to the story the ocean god Tangaroa was the one who led the attack and he provided weapons for the fish.

The octopus got the sucking tentacles and the swordfish got the sword.

This myth tells how sea creatures got their distinguished features.
