What if aging well was less about luck and more about what you know and what you do?
I'm Dr.
Linda Friedland,
And this is the Longevity Blueprint.
I want to talk about something today that almost nobody is talking about.
Not in doctor's waiting rooms,
Not on wellness podcasts,
Not even between close friends,
Despite the fact that it affects the majority of women in midlife and beyond.
I'm talking about vaginal aging.
And I want to say this clearly from the start.
If you're experiencing discomfort,
Dryness,
Painful sex or recurrent urinary tract infections since menopause,
You are not alone.
You're not imagining it and you do not have to simply put up with it.
This is a medical issue and it has medical solutions.
There are alternate approaches,
But it deserves a real conversation.
The striking exception is that here's something that genuinely surprises most women when they hear it.
We're often told that the vagina simply ages along with the rest of the body.
Even many doctors accept this as fact,
But it is not true.
While most body systems age gradually,
Often imperceptibly through our 50s and 60s,
The vagina can age out of sync with the rest of us,
Sometimes by as much as three decades earlier.
Because vaginal tissue is profoundly estrogen dependent.
And unlike other hormones that decline slowly,
Estrogen drops suddenly and steeply at menopause.
And when it disappears,
Vaginal tissue particularly changes rapidly,
Thinning,
Drying,
Losing elasticity and natural lubrication.
The medical term for this is genitourinary syndrome of menopause,
GSM.
Can also affect the bladder,
The urethra,
The pelvic floor,
Leading to symptoms of frequency of urination and recurrent infections.
And unlike hot flushes,
Which often ease over time,
These symptoms tend to worsen without treatment.
For some women,
That means living with significant discomfort,
Not for a few years,
But for decades till the end of their lives.
The majority of women experiencing these symptoms stay silent.
They never mention them to their doctor.
Some feel embarrassed.
Some just assume it's part of aging or that they're alone.
Some have been dismissed when they did raise it as not important,
And many simply don't know that effective treatment exists.
I've had patients who had been quietly suffering for years.
Some had stopped completely being intimate with their partners.
Some were managing recurrent urinary tract infections with repeated antibiotics.
Not necessary,
Never knowing the root cause was actually hormonal.
The silence has real consequences.
So what actually works,
You may ask?
Moisturizers and lubricants can offer some comfort and they have their place,
Including natural remedies.
But they cannot restore vaginal tissue or reverse the underlying changes.
Only estrogen can do that.
Low dose vaginal estrogen is highly localized,
Highly effective and FDA approved.
Because it is applied directly to the tissue,
Systemic absorption is minimal,
Making it appropriate for almost all women,
Including many who aren't candidates for proper oral hormone therapy.
It restores what estrogen withdrawal took away.
It thickens and strengthens tissue.
It restores natural pH balance and lubrication,
And it significantly reduces these recurrent urinary tract infection,
A benefit that is consistently underappreciated.
There's an amazing Dr.
Mary Monarch from the Mayo Clinic who advises,
And she says,
Don't seek,
Put off seeking help.
Vaginal estrogen can reverse these changes.
And for many women,
The difference is nothing short of life-changing,
Either oral HRT or oral HRT.
Local.
Your vagina does not need to age three decades ahead of you.
Relief,
Repair and renewal are genuinely possible and within reach.
If anything I've described today resonates,
Please bring it up with your doctor.
Write it down before your appointment if that helps.
You deserve a full conversation,
Not a hurried dismissal.
You are absolutely allowed to ask for treatment.
This is the Longevity Blueprint on Insight Timer.
Until next time,
Age boldly,
Live well and make good choices.
