Hi,
Dr.
Janice Webb here.
Today I want to talk to you about boundaries.
So boundaries are so confusing for people,
But yet they're so very important.
They protect us when we're out among people.
They protect us from the inside.
So having healthy boundaries is key.
Everyone has two boundaries.
Picture them like this surrounding you.
One is inside the other.
The inner boundary is the one that protects the world from you.
Your outer boundary is the one that protects you from the world.
So this boundary screens what other people,
The arrows that other people sling your way.
When I'm talking emotionally,
Of course,
Your inner boundary protects other people from the arrows that you might sling when you're feeling emotional.
So today,
I'm going to focus on the internal boundary.
Next video,
We'll talk about the external one.
Okay,
So the internal boundary is the one that protects the world from you.
What happens if that boundary is too weak?
Well,
What happens is that you are not protected,
Other people are not protected from you.
So you're not protected from behaving impulsively.
You might get angry,
For example,
And say things that you regret later.
You may put things too harshly that other people can't hear them because you're too upset.
And what happens is that your relationships can be harmed by this.
And people will not want to be around you.
You'll lose friends.
You might be confused about why this is happening.
And you end up not feeling really in control of your own feelings and reactions.
Now,
The next form,
The next problem that can happen with your inner boundary is that it's too rigid.
And this is really common of people with childhood emotional neglect.
Because when you grow up in a household where people don't readily talk about their feelings and emotional needs.
And say,
No,
That's not okay with me,
For example,
You don't learn how to do that.
When your inner boundary is too rigid,
You hold yourself back,
You push your feelings down,
You don't adequately protect yourself.
And you end up overprotecting yourself by avoiding situations.
That in which you might feel vulnerable or in which something possibly could happen.
And that's not healthy for you.
The solution to all of this is to learn to use your feelings,
Identify your feelings,
And express them the way they're meant to be used and expressed.
Learn how to find your voice to speak your own truth.
Nice to talk with you.
Talk again soon.
