Hello,
I'm Dr.
Denise Webb,
Licensed psychologist in Boston,
Massachusetts,
And I've spent the last 11 or 12 years trying to call attention to the topic of childhood emotional neglect and help people understand how it happens to a child and how it plays out over your adult life and also how very healable it is.
And what you can do to heal it.
And one of the most common questions that I get asked What can I do to really get my healing started?
And kind of give myself a good running start on this.
So last week I mentioned there are two things you can do and I talked about the first one which was and is Start learning everything you can about childhood emotional neglect and applying it to yourself.
And the second I'm going to talk about in this video,
And it is start reaching out to your walled off feelings and start trying to feel them.
I know it sounds ridiculous,
Ridiculously simple.
But it's not very simple,
But it is very doable.
Basically,
It involves trying to feel your feelings.
And think about emotional neglect when it happens to you as a kid.
What happens is that you build a wall that blocks your feelings off so that you don't have to be bothered with them.
You don't have to bother your parents with them.
And then you go through the rest of your adult life kind of separated from your feelings in a way that you're not meant to be.
So when you start trying to feel your feelings,
It's like you're taking a chip out of that wall that stands between you and your emotions.
A great way to do this is to sit down three times a day and ask yourself,
What am I feeling right now?
Just the act of doing this helps you.
If you continue doing it,
Continue doing it.
It will break down the wall between you and your feelings.
Of course,
There are other steps after that,
But these are two really key things you can do to start healing your emotional neglect.
See you soon.
