This episode is dedicated to my client,
Kenzie,
And every teenager who is excitedly planning and dreaming about what will be their epic summer.
As we embark on a new month,
It's time for both the thrill and the ease of summer.
We earned it.
It's been difficult and challenging to live through a pandemic.
And as we are in many parts of the world not yet feeling the certain grounding of life,
I hope that we have all learned this important teaching.
To be grateful in the simple luxuries we have always had and the ability to live,
To return to this,
And something even better.
This summer and after more than two years of living without the freedoms we have almost notably taken for granted,
Freedom that I hope you will appreciate and not forget,
This is your summer to soar,
To move in the world with love and to embrace the idea of limitless possibility.
In this episode of Ask Dorothy,
I share with you the first annual summer epic bucket list that happens to be the brainchild of my client,
Kenzie,
Who graciously said yes to allowing me to use her first name and to share much of her list,
To which I couldn't help but think that at 15,
Not only is she wise beyond her years for the items that she has chosen,
But also most of these items are what you and I would benefit from and enjoy as well.
Kenzie asked me spontaneously during one of our recent sessions if she could share some of her summer bucket list.
We then set out to add a few more items and what I loved was her impromptu explaining of why these were important to her.
Perhaps you too will contemplate why the items on your summer bucket list are meaningful to you.
When we name the reasons for why something is important to us,
It becomes even more special and we are more likely to seek this out.
As I share some of Kenzie's list here,
Let it inspire you to create your own epic summer bucket list.
Enjoy where your ideals and wish-filled desires lead you beyond adventure,
Beyond self-awareness and autonomy and into what magic is in store for you and as you embrace every moment of summer.
But first,
A few thoughts to contemplate.
What magic is in store for you this summer?
Consider something that you have been deliberating,
That has been calling your name and give it your attention for a moment.
Do you have something in mind?
Okay,
Hold this for a moment in your consciousness.
Whether it is a change that you have been contemplating,
A new idea,
An experience,
Something you've been putting off or something that you would like to do more of.
Now as you hold this in your mind,
What awakens within you?
Can you affirm to yourself happiness,
Self-worth and more of what you deserve to live,
To be and to experience?
15 is a special age in one's life.
It's a time of new experiences,
Of discovering yourself,
Of being true to yourself even when some of your decisions can be difficult,
Especially if they are distinct and not alike the status quo.
15 is also a coming of age.
It reckons the forthcoming entry into adulthood whilst also enjoying the innocence of having your whole life ahead of you.
It beckons greater freedom and independence together with the comfort of being taken care of and loved wholly.
15 is a reasonable age for a modern platonic first love and summer romance and the innocence and purity of epic love when we dive in fully and with our heart wide open.
Who you are at 15 sets the stage of who you will be.
It is a monolithic time in one's life for building confidence and self-worth and for making decisions that empower personal development and your sense of self,
Including what will support your greater life goals and ideals.
It's also a perfect time as Kenzie noted to up-level her habits and routines because she learned through trial and error just how important it is to have good sleep habits,
To make good food choices,
And to continue to find the balance between a busy athletic life and school.
If we master these life tools and practices,
They become the habits we easily live by.
Whether you are 15 or 45 or 73,
A summer bucket list could be part of a master plan for how you rebrand yourself,
How you set in motion new habits and a kinder mindset,
And how you prepare for what's next whilst remembering to savor in all of life's moments.
Your summer epic bucket list is meant to call you back,
To contemplate the sweet innocence and wonder of life together with the hopeful reminder that it is never too late to live some of your earlier missed opportunities or relive earlier parts of your life with the wisdom you now hold.
I share with you some of Kenzie's bucket list because I want to remind you that your own list is not age dependent.
It is through imagination and ideals and the surrender to love and magic and happiness that you feel inspired to go in search of these and to reclaim the joy of life's perfect mysteries.
Here are some of what Kenzie came up with for her epic summer bucket list,
And I added a few of my own suggestions.
As you listen,
I urge you to contemplate any or all of these for your own epic summer bucket list.
First up,
Going to the drive-in,
Shopping in the mall,
Going to the beach,
Reading a book or several,
Making plans for the week in advance so you have activities to look forward to,
Being spontaneous and doing what you feel like doing,
Sleeping in,
Staying up late,
Choosing activities you can do alone so that you get to know yourself better,
Enjoying all of the simple moments of life with no pressure,
Just ease and flow and sinking into what happens next,
Saying yes to most everything and dare yourself to get off the grid,
Whether for the day,
The weekend or longer.
Discover more awaiting you in your own backyard,
In your neighborhood and beyond.
We can all live the magic of 15.
It is a mindset after all.
Let me know in the comments with a yes if you are up for the challenge to write your own summer bucket list for yourself,
Perhaps with your loved ones,
And then to dive in.
