When you can't sleep,
Your mind won't stop and the quiet of the night feels even louder than the day.
There's an ancient prayer that has been bringing people rest for thousands of years.
Eight simple words that David wrote for knights exactly like this one.
Words that hold peace,
Rest,
And protection all at once.
So you don't have to have it together right now.
You don't have to fix anything tonight.
You don't even have to know what to pray.
You've already shown up here,
Pressed play,
And sometimes that's the hardest part.
So all you have to do now is simply allow yourself to be here.
And God is already here with you.
So take one slow breath in.
And let tonight be simple.
Just you.
And God in this moment.
Whatever brought you here tonight,
The racing thoughts,
The weight you've been carrying,
The worry that crept in the moment you lay down,
You don't have to carry any of it alone.
Gently close your eyes if that feels comfortable.
Let your body find a position it can soften into.
Let your hands rest somewhere easy,
On your belly,
At your sides,
Wherever feels most natural and comfortable.
Take a slow breath into your nose.
And a long,
Quiet exhale out through your mouth.
Again breathing in.
And breathing out.
One more time,
All the way in.
And all the way out.
God wants to hold what you've been carrying.
Can you open your hands now?
Relaxing them is a sign that you are open to releasing whatever you're holding.
Let's move slowly through the rest of your body now,
Gently inviting each part to soften.
If any instruction doesn't feel right for you,
You can skip it or adjust it.
You're free to honor what your body needs tonight.
Bring your awareness down to your feet.
Notice the feeling as you move your toes.
Your feet resting against the bed.
The weight of your heels.
On your next exhale.
Let your feet grow just a little heavier as if they're sinking gently into something warm and supported.
Let that heaviness drift slowly upward into your ankles.
Your calves,
Your shins.
If you've been on your feet today,
Carrying,
Moving,
Holding things together,
Let your lower legs release that effort now.
You don't have to hold any of that anymore.
Let your awareness rise into your knees.
Up into the front of your legs.
The back of your legs.
Resting completely into the surface beneath you.
You don't have to hold yourself up.
You are being held.
Take a soft breath in.
And as you exhale,
Let your whole lower body melt just a little more.
Now,
Notice your hips and pelvis.
This area that often carries more emotion than we realize.
Without needing to solve anything in this moment,
You might simply pray,
God,
I'm open to letting go.
On your next exhale,
Let your hips grow heavier.
The muscles around your pelvis softening and releasing.
Bring your attention now to your belly and your lower back.
Notice the gentle rise and fall as you breathe.
Let your belly be nice and soft.
Imagine God's breath moving through you.
Refreshing your lower back your sides.
The front of your belly.
Bringing ease to every place that's been working so hard.
Let that wave of releasing move up into your chest and your mid-back.
As you inhale,
You might pray,
God,
You are with me.
And as you exhale,
I can rest.
And now bringing your awareness to your shoulders.
We so often carry the weight of responsibility in our shoulders.
So imagine all of that weight sliding slowly off your shoulders into God's capable hands.
Letting your shoulders melt away from your ears Let your upper back soften into the surface beneath you.
And feel your awareness drifting down your arms.
Your upper arms,
Elbows.
Forearms and wrists and finally your hands and fingers with your next exhale.
Imagine anything left in your hands,
Any last grip on the day,
Flowing out through your open fingers.
Leaving your hands warm.
Have ye?
And open Now bring your attention up into your neck and throat.
Just let this area soften with your next exhale.
Let your jaw unclench.
Let your tongue rest away from the roof of your mouth.
And notice how that tiny release softens your whole face.
The muscles of your cheeks.
Around your eyes.
And the space between your eyebrows.
If you notice that your forehead is holding tightness.
Imagine Holy Spirit tending to you now.
Speaking peace over every thought.
Take one more slow breath in.
And a long,
Unhurried exhale out.
From the crown of your head.
To the tips of your toes.
Let your whole body receive this.
It is safe to rest now.
God is watching over you.
There is one verse tonight that we're going to let carry you all the way into sleep.
We'll come back to it again and again.
In peace,
I will both lie down and sleep.
For you alone,
O Lord,
Make me dwell in safety.
In just eight words.
Psalm chapter 4 verse 8 gives us everything we need for tonight.
Peace.
Rest.
And safety in this moment.
Allow these different passages of scripture to wash over you with waves of peace,
Rest,
And safety.
You don't have to do anything with them.
Just let them wash over you.
The water of the word renewing your mind as you rest.
The scriptures that are spoken tonight are there for you in the description of this video.
But for now,
Just rest and receive.
As your body continues to soften.
Allow your breath to deepen.
As the room around you grows quiet.
And still.
In peace,
I will both lie down and sleep.
For you alone,
O Lord.
Make me dwell in safety.
I am leaving you with a gift,
Peace of mind and heart,
And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.
So don't be troubled or afraid.
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you.
All whose thoughts are fixed on you.
Trust in the Lord always,
For the Lord God is the eternal rock.
Don't worry about anything.
Instead,
Pray about everything.
Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done.
Then you will experience God's peace,
Which exceeds anything we can understand.
Is peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
I listen carefully to what God the Lord is saying,
For he speaks peace to his faithful people.
And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.
For as members of one body,
You are called to live in peace and always be thankful.
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me.
Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows,
But take heart because I have overcome the world.
The Lord gives his people strength.
The Lord blesses them with peace.
Now may the Lord of Peace himself give you his peace at all times and in every situation.
The Lord be with you all.
Those who love your instructions have great peace and do not stumble.
My heart is confident in you,
Oh God.
My heart is confident.
No wonder I can sing your praises.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity,
But of power,
Love,
And self-discipline.
The Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
God's peace will guard your hearts and minds.
Lord,
My heart is not proud.
My eyes are not haughty.
I don't concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp.
Instead.
I have calmed and quieted myself like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother's milk.
Yes,
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
Oh Israel,
Put your hope in the Lord,
Now and always.
Let all that I am wait quietly before God,
For my hope is in Him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
My fortress where I will not be shaken.
My victory and honor come from God alone.
E is my refuge,
A rock where no enemy can reach me.
Oh my people,
Trust in him at all times.
Pour out your heart to Him.
For God is our refuge.
I love the Lord because He hears my voice and my prayer for mercy.
Because he bends down to listen.
I will pray as long as I have breath.
I called on the name of the Lord.
Please,
Lord,
Save me.
How kind the Lord is,
How good he is.
So merciful this God of ours.
The Lord protects those of simple heart.
Let my soul be at rest again,
For the Lord has been good to me.
Take a slow breath in and a long breath out.
Let peace be what your body rests in now.
The Lord is my shepherd.
I have all that I need.
He lets me lie down in green meadows.
He leads me beside peaceful streams.
He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
Bringing honor to his name.
Then Jesus said,
Come to me,
All of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens,
And I will give you rest.
I bake my yoke upon you.
Let me teach you.
Because I am humble and gentle at heart.
And you will find rest for your souls.
Where my yoke is easy to bear.
And the burden I give you is light.
It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night,
Anxiously working for food to eat,
For God gives rest to his loved ones.
I lay down and slept,
Yet I woke up in safety,
For the Lord was watching over me.
He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.
He counts the stars and calls them all by name.
How great is our Lord.
His power is absolute.
His understanding is beyond comprehension.
He lets me rest in green meadows.
He leads me beside peaceful streams.
He renews my strength.
My child,
Don't lose sight of common sense and discernment.
Hang on to them.
For they will refresh your soul.
They are like jewels on a necklace.
They keep you safe on your way and your feet will not stumble.
You can go to bed without fear.
You will lie down and sleep soundly.
You need not be afraid of the sudden disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked.
The Lord is your security.
He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.
The Lord is my strength and shield.
I trust him with all my heart.
He helps me and my heart is filled with joy.
I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.
This is what the Sovereign Lord,
The Holy One of Israel says.
Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved,
And quietness and confidence is your strength.
He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired,
And young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.
The Lord is my light and my salvation,
So why should I be afraid?
The Lord is my fortress protecting me from danger,
So why should I tremble?
I look up to the mountains,
Does my help come from there?
My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.
Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you.
You will never let the righteous be shaken.
Breathe.
Take a slow breath in and a long breath out.
It is good for you to lie down.
And sleep under God's protection.
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
This I declare about the Lord.
He alone is my refuge,
My place of safety.
He is my God and I trust him.
For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease.
He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
Nor the arrow that flies in the day.
If you make the Lord your refuge,
If you make the Most High your shelter,
No evil will conquer you,
No plague will come near your home.
Where he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.
He will not let you stumble.
The one who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed,
He who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.
The Lord himself watches over you.
The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.
The sun will not harm you by day,
Nor the moon at night.
The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.
The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go,
Both now and forever.
The Lord says,
I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
When they call on me,
I will answer.
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.
The Lord is my rock,
My fortress,
And my savior.
My God is my rock in whom I find protection.
He is my shield,
The power that saves me,
And my place of safety.
But in that coming day,
No weapon turned against you will succeed.
You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you.
These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord.
Their vindication will come from me.
I,
The Lord,
Have spoken.
So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.
Let the oceans roar and foam.
But the mountains tremble as the waters surge.
The Lord of Heaven's armies is here among us.
The God of Israel is our fortress.
God is our refuge and strength,
Always ready to help in times of trouble.
Oh Lord,
You have examined my heart and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I'm far away.
You see me when I travel and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night,
But even in darkness I cannot hide from you.
To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.
The Lord your God is living among you.
He is a mighty Savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With His love He will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.
May the Lord bless you and protect you.
May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord show you his favor and give you peace.
Take a slow breath in.
And a long breath out.
You are held.
You are watched over.
You are safe.
Drift now into the care of the one who never sleeps.

Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge.
As your body continues to soften.
Allow your breath to deepen.
As the room around you grows quiet.
And still.
In peace,
I will both lie down and sleep.
For you alone,
Oh Lord.
Make me dwell in safety I am leaving you with a gift,
Peace of mind and heart.
And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.
So don't be troubled.
Or afraid.
Instead,
I have calmed and quieted myself,
Like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother's milk.
Yes,
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
Oh Israel,
Put your hope in the Lord.
Please,
Lord,
Save me.
How kind the Lord is,
How good he is,
So merciful this God of ours.
I make my yoke upon you.
Let me teach you.
Because I am humble and gentle at heart.
And you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy to bear.
How great is our Lord!
His power is absolute.
His understanding is beyond comprehension.
He lets me rest in green meadows.
He leads me beside peaceful streams.
He renews my strength.
My child,
Don't lose sight of common sense and discernment.
Hang on to them,
For they will refresh your soul They are like jewels on a necklace.
Ask your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you.

I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.

I have calmed and quieted myself,
Like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother's milk.
Yes,
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
Oh Israel,
Put your hope in the Lord,
Now and always.
Make my yoke upon you.
You renews my strength.
My child,
Don't lose sight of common sense and discernment.
It will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.
Ask your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you.
Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge.
As your body continues to soften.
Allow your breath to deepen.
As the room around you grows quiet and still.
In peace,
I will both lie down and sleep.
For you alone,
O Lord.
Make me dwell in safety.
I am leaving you with a gift,
Peace of mind and heart.
And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.
His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

I have calmed and quieted myself,

For now,
It all belongs to God.
Let's pray together.
Abba,
We come to you tonight just as we are.
And we know you see us.
You are glad we're here.
You're always drawing near to us long before we think to turn toward you.
We release any lingering pressure.
We entrust it to you.
You are steady,
Unhurried,
Unafraid.
Sitting close,
Keeping watch,
Waiting for us to receive So we do receive.
We receive your peace,
The kind that arrives even when we can't explain it,
Because you are who you say you are.
We receive safety in this moment knowing that the one who watches over us is awake through every hour of this night.
You keep watch so we can rest.
And we receive your presence,
The greatest gift of all.
Something living and warm and real.
Just you.
Ear with us tonight.
May rest come gently.
May it come deeply.
And may those of us who wake in the night find you already there,
God,
Waiting quietly.
In peace,
I will both lie down and sleep.
For you alone,
O Lord,
Make me dwell in safety.
We love you,
God.
We trust you.
Good night.
