In this version of the African American spiritual “Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen”, I wanted to use the cello as the voice that cries out the injustice and pain suffered by enslaved people. Although this spiritual can trigger discomfort, the act of crying and embracing suffering allows us to clean our bodies and spirits, and to express our sorrows to work through the process of healing.
