This meditation practice is for cultivating a healthy ego before walking a path to dissolve the ego. By cultivating loving-kindness for ourselves first, we generate a natural outpouring of metta for others. Loving-kindness or matta bhavana can also be used as a protective meditation to guard against the hindrances of the mind. One might also cultivate the conditions to enter into jhana or deep absorption from this practice. This meditation is inspired by the Suttas and the Visuddhimagga.
