The increasing amount of time spent online also puts great strain unto our eyes. This is a simple series of exercises to relax the eyes. Recommended that you do this at least once a day but you can of course also do it more often. The exercises used are derived from yoga, specifically from the Sivananda tradition in which eye exercises are included in every complete practice session.

Eye exercise Close your eyes for a moment and wrap the palms of your hands together as fast as you can creating walls and energy and then put the palms of your hands on top of your eyes so that the fingers are resting on top of your head.

Apply a little bit of pressure with your palms onto your eyeballs and let your eyeballs fully relax into the palms of your hand.

Then release any pressure and slowly take your hands down a little bit,

Opening your eyes to the palms and darkness of your fingers,

Lowering your gaze,

Spreading your fingers letting in more light and then starting to massage around your eyes,

Massaging your eyebrows past that area,

Maybe even going to your temples,

Going below the eyes,

Whatever feels good and comfortable for you right now.

Then you lower your hands and you open your eyes widely and you look up with your eyes to the ceiling and then down to the floor and up to the ceiling again and down to the floor,

Doing this without moving your head but it's just the eyes that are moving and once more up to the ceiling and down to the floor.

And then you move your eyes all the way to the right,

Looking as far as you can,

Coming to center again and all the way to the left,

Center,

Right,

Center,

Left,

Center,

Right,

Center,

Left,

Center.

Then you close your eyes for a moment,

Again letting them relax.

Then you open them up and you imagine having a clock in front of you and you look up to the 12th and now you go around in a clockwise direction,

Going to 1,

2,

3,

4,

5,

6,

Now we're at the bottom,

7,

8,

9,

10,

11,

12 and then you close your eyes again for a moment.

Now you open them again and now you go anti-clockwise,

So you're going from 12 to 11,

10,

9,

10,

11,

11,

11,

9,

8,

7,

6,

5,

4,

3,

2,

1,

12 and again you close your eyes for a moment.

And we do this a third time,

Opening our eyes again,

Looking up,

Going to 12,

1,

2,

3,

4,

5,

6,

7,

8,

9,

10,

11,

12 and then we close our eyes again for a moment.

We once more wrap the palms of our hands together,

Creating warmth and energy and then we put our hands again in front of our eyes,

Pressing the palms of our hands slightly onto our closed eyeballs and our fingers are on top of our head.

We let once more our eyeballs relax into our hands,

Releasing any kind of tension that might still be there.

Then we release the pressure,

We take the hands down so it's only the fingers covering our eyes,

We open up the eyes,

We lower our gaze and we slowly start opening the fingers,

Bringing in more and more light.

Once more you might choose to massage around the eyes,

Whatever feels good right now.

And then you take your hands down and you're ready for whatever is to come.

Very effective practice, particularly if you have no opportunity to go or look outside and change your focal distance or allow the sights and sounds of nature to help relax the eyes. Imagination is Goodland so are indoor plants and photos/paintings, but even with those, this practice is an excellent between-meetings or post-meeting reset for the eyes. I find it especially helpful when there has been a lot of screen sharing with PowerPoint slides containing a lot of text to read.
