Why Listen to Literature? - The Female Stoic Podcast
This short is taken from a longer session of The Female Stoic podcast where we discuss how we can empower ourselves in a stoic way. In the 18th Century, the Blue Stockings Society was an informal women's social and educational movement in England that emphasised education and mutual cooperation. (Hence the wig!) The Female Stoic Podcast looks at the Stoic Philosophy through a Bluestocking Lens. It offers practical, non judgemental advice for women, with reference to the Female Literary Masters and the lessons they teach us. Your host Stephanie Poppins, is a former high school teacher of English Literature and Philosophy, and considers herself to be a Natural Born Stoic. When we listen to the literary masters,
We are honouring those who walked this earth before us and who learned lessons,
Who became an expert at their craft,
Who honoured the spoken and written word and who sought out an endeavour that they understood would be a lifetime commitment,
A daily disciplined commitment.
And we are respecting that by listening to that.
When we listen to well-performed literature that honours these words,
We are immersing ourselves in another time and learning about,
For example with Jane Austen,
The societal expectations upon women of the time.
So we are learning about history,
The human plight,
The struggle and of course honouring just that.
Take a listen to some classic literature.
You might just learn something.
