Avoiding Reactivity With Jane Eyre- The Female Stoic Podcast
Jane Eyre is fundamentally a story of Stoic endurance, highlighting Jane's journey from an emotionally reactive child to a woman of principled, calm fortitude. She embraces stoicism by mastering her passions, prioritizing moral duty over desire, and maintaining self-respect in the face of poverty, abuse, and intense temptation, rather than succumbing to despair. There are so many we can learn from classic literature. The Female Stoic podcast aims to address these lessons. Charlotte Bronte said,
Life appears to me.
Too short to be spent in nursing animosity or registering wrongs.
What she's saying here is reactivity Reaction to other people's actions.
Is doing nothing more than harming ourselves.
If we are to keep the walls of our inner citadel high,
If we are to protect our inner peace,
Reactivity.
.
.
Is the very antithesis of this.
The Stoic philosophers teach us that We only have two things we are in control of.
How we react to things and the protection of our virtue.
If we are to respect.
And protect our inner peace.
We have to understand that all the externals,
Everything outside of the inner citadel.
Is outside of our control We can do nothing about that.
So reacting adversely to that.
Is only attacking us.
If you are interested in the blue stockings and how they influenced the authors that I read.
Come over to the Female Stoic page and I'll see you there.
