Find a comfortable position.
Let yourself settle into whatever is supporting you.
The floor,
A chair.
Take a slow breath in and exhale.
Today we're not going anywhere special.
We're not trying to have a profound spiritual experience.
We're going to practice noticing what is already here.
Bring your attention to your body.
Notice your hands.
Maybe you can feel the temperature of the air against your skin.
Notice the weight of your body.
The movement of your breath.
Consider,
For a moment,
How much of your life happens without asking for your attention.
Your lungs breathing.
Your heart beating.
Your body digesting.
Your eyes seeing and your ears hearing.
You don't have to make any of this happen.
You simply participate in it.
Take a breath and notice how strange and ordinary and extraordinary that is.
Now bring your attention to the space around you.
Notice the sounds.
Notice the near sounds,
The sounds close to you.
Notice the far sounds,
The ones far away.
Notice sounds you like.
And the sounds you don't particularly care about.
There is no need to make them beautiful,
Just notice.
Maybe you can hear the hum of a refrigerator.
Maybe you hear a car,
A bird.
Someone moving around.
Maybe even your own breath.
Ordinary things.
And yet,
This is your actual life.
The divine doesn't necessarily have to arrive with thunder,
A revelation,
Or some enormous spiritual experience.
Maybe sometimes it looks like sunlight through a window.
A warm shower.
A stranger holding the door open.
A plant growing toward the light.
A familiar voice saying your name.
The first sip of coffee.
A pet curled up beside you.
The gentle hand of a friend on your shoulder.
Think of one ordinary thing that has brought you comfort recently.
Bring it to mind.
And rather than moving quickly past it,
See if you can stay with it.
So this ordinary thing that brought you comfort,
What did it feel like?
What did you notice?
What did it give to you?
Let yourself appreciate it.
Without force.
And we don't force it because we want to make everything beautiful.
It's not because life is always good,
But because even in an imperfect life.
There are moments worth noticing.
Maybe this is one way we connect with something sacred,
Not by escaping ordinary life.
But by becoming fully present for it.
Take another breath.
Take a look around your inner world.
What have you been rushing past?
What have you stopped noticing because you've seen it a thousand times?
And what might happen if you let yourself be surprised by something gloriously ordinary?
For the next few breaths,
Simply notice.
Breathing.
Hearing.
Feeling.
Existing.
Nothing extraordinary needs to happen.
You're already here.
And maybe for this moment.
That is enough.
Take one more breath in for this meditation and exhale.
When you return to your day,
See if you can do it without looking for a spiritual experience.
Instead,
Notice what's already happening,
The ordinary,
The imperfect,
The easily overlooked.
And see what happens when you meet it with your full attention.
