Grounding - A Practice For Connection
When we ground deeply into the Earth beneath our feet we connect to every spark of life on the planet. From the trees, birds, people, animals and microbes in the soil to the unseen beings and entities that surround us - we all connect to this beautiful, living planet that carries us through the cosmos. We are connected. Music by Ingy

What does it mean to be grounded?
To be solid and connected to the earth?
To feel the ground beneath your feet and know that you are connected to every living thing through this bond we share.
This connection to the greater planet that we walk upon.
What does it mean to be grounded?
Often when I'm asked how to become more grounded,
My first response is go play outside.
Go walk on the earth.
Go feel the stone and the dirt and the grass beneath your feet.
Lean against a tree and meditate in the embrace of nature.
That is one of the easiest and best ways to feel at one with the earth,
Grounded and connected.
But sometimes we find ourselves in the depth of winter or living in the city or separate,
Unable to find that connection,
Unable to walk the earth and feel it strong beneath us.
And for that,
In those times we turn our meditation downward and feel our own energy reach into the earth and draw that power and connection upwards,
Tethering us to the power beneath our feet even as we reach up to heaven.
As we begin this meditation for grounding,
Find yourself in a comfortable seated position.
For grounding,
It's best to be seated with your feet flat on the floor,
Your spine straight and your neck long.
But if you want to sit on the floor,
Or even better,
Sitting on a large stone outside or against a tree,
Let yourself be supported by the earth and think about your connection to the ground beneath you.
As we start,
Bring your attention to your breath.
Not trying to change it at first,
But simply being aware of the air moving in and out of your lungs.
Now begin to deepen your breath.
Bring your attention down to your belly and let your stomach expand and contract with each breath.
You may even want to bring your hands to your stomach and feel the breath move in and out.
Beginning to slow your exhales,
Trying to make them twice as long as your inhales.
You may want to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth,
Or whatever is going to feel most comfortable for you right now.
Slowing and deepening the breath as you begin to take your attention to the bottoms of your feet and the base of your spine.
Wherever you feel that you're connecting to the ground today,
If you're sitting on the floor,
It's going to be the base of your spine,
Sitting in a chair,
The bottoms of your feet,
And begin to see roots growing down.
Down from the base of your spine and the bottoms of your feet.
Down through the floor beneath you and into the earth.
Moving slowly,
Seeing the roots go down through the floor,
Down through the structure of the building that you're in,
And into the ground beneath.
Through the foundation and into the dirt and soil.
Becoming aware of all the life surrounding you.
All the energy of the earth right here on the surface.
Bring your attention to the life in the soil,
To the grass and plants growing around you.
Feel the trees and feel their roots reaching deep into the earth,
Even as you send your roots down.
Become aware of the life,
The higher-pitched feelings of energy from the plants and the animals,
Compared to the slow,
Gentle movements of trees and plants.
Become aware of the birds nesting in the trees,
Squirrels and other animals,
Moving around and all the life surrounding you.
And now begin to move deeper,
Deeper into the earth,
Even beyond where the roots of the trees go.
Feel the rocks and soil all around you as you move deeper,
Deeper,
Feeling groundwater and bedrock.
Reaching down into the earth as you move past rocks and stone.
Finally,
Reaching a place where your energy reaching down begins to meet the energy of the earth as it reaches upward.
Feel it embrace you warm,
Powerful,
Old and wise.
Let that energy surround you and feel yourself floating in a sea of power.
The power of the earth as steady as stone.
Feel the wisdom and feel yourself connected to every other person and life on this planet.
Feel their connections to the earth,
Even as your own strengthens.
Feeling as if you're anchored to the ground.
Now slowly start to bring that energy up.
Feel yourself rising through the layers of the earth again,
But feel that strong,
Powerful connection to the earth's energy and power coming with you as you move.
Wrapping yourself in the weight and warmth and the strength that it brings.
Pull that energy up,
Up until you reach the surface and feel connected to your own body.
See that deep,
Thick rooted connection underneath your feet and reaching down from the base of your spine.
Now with that strong connection under your feet,
Reach your attention upwards.
Without moving your physical body,
Turn your mental eye up to the sky and feel the connection between the earth and the moon.
A connection made that much stronger by the connection you have to the earth.
And know that even as you stay rooted and connected to the planet,
Even as you're thoroughly rooted to the earth,
You still can connect to the energy of the divine.
The light and twinkly energies of the stars.
But as you move through the earth,
As you move through your day and as you move through your life,
That support,
That connection to the earth lets you move with confidence and strength.
So much confidence and wisdom in the earth.
Carrying it with you as you move through the world and knowing how much power is available to you every day.
And as a being,
As a soul moving through this world,
Feel that power moving through you,
Activating every cell of your body,
Feeling warm,
Strong,
And see yourself moving through the world and see how different and better your days can be when you feel the confidence and power of the earth beneath your feet.
Feel how much easier it is to reach your arms up to the sky when you feel firmly planted and balanced,
Knowing that you are grounded and can take and handle whatever is thrown at you.
With that power still flowing through you,
Begin to wiggle your fingers,
Wiggle your toes.
You may feel a slight tug on the bottoms of your feet as you try to lift them.
Just reminding you of your connection to the earth.
And that's fine.
Keep that grounded feeling of reaching down.
Let your breath begin to return to normal,
Still slow and even.
Roll your shoulders and feel how connected you feel to your body,
Even as you bring that energy of the earth up with you.
When you're ready,
Open your eyes and see the connections all around you and know that you are connected to every living thing,
Even as you're connected to the earth.
