Do you carry everyone else's needs, emotions, and wellbeing — and then judge yourself harshly when you can't hold it all together? Part of the Mandala Card of the Day Guided Journaling Practice series, this 15-minute session draws on Paul Gilbert's Compassion Focused Therapy — showing that self-criticism activates the same threat response as external danger. When you are hard on yourself, you are not sharpening yourself. You are contracting. Kristin Neff's research confirms that responding to your struggles with kindness literally changes your body's chemistry — moving you from threat into safety. Much of what you have been judging yourself for was never fully yours to carry. This practice invites you to set some of it down. This practice includes a breathing reset, a science-informed reflection on self-criticism and self-compassion, a body awareness practice, a journaling prompt with time to write, and closing affirmations to carry forward.
