So today I wanna talk about what codependency recovery really involves.
Because for me,
When I started,
I was 21 years old and I had no idea what I was doing.
So I really wanna give you kind of a brief overview of what to expect.
Codependency is basically a pattern of self-sacrifice,
Where we're sacrificing our needs for other people,
Hoping to get the love and validation that we can't give to ourselves.
And this creates very one-sided relationships relationships with us doing all the heavy lifting.
So in codependency recovery,
We have to unlearn these behaviors.
We can still give,
But we really don't want to sacrifice ourselves to do that.
So here are three key components that you need to have in a good solid codependency recovery.
The first one is befriending yourself.
This is where you actually start creating a relationship with yourself.
So instead of always looking to others for your love and approval,
You start to learn how to give it to yourself.
The second one is assessing your relationships.
Are they healthy?
Are they toxic?
Which ones do you need to change or possibly let go of?
And this is an ongoing process,
But it's super key because we wanna look at the health of our relationships and how we are participating in that,
Because that's the piece we can change in recovery.
We can't change what other people are doing.
Now,
The last element of codependency recovery is family of origin work.
And this is really important work,
Usually done with a therapist who can guide you through the process of looking at your childhood,
How it created your codependency,
And if there are any traumas or past issues of abuse that need to be dealt with,
Because that's what is underneath your codependency,
That's gonna be dealt with in a very safe,
Confidential environment with that therapist.
This is a process that you get to pick your starting point.
For me,
When I started my recovery,
Gosh,
About 30 plus years ago,
I started with assessing relationships because my whole focus at 21 years old was I want connection.
I want to find my Prince Charming.
So of course,
That was my motivation at the time.
Now fast forward 15 years into my recovery,
I was missing that first ingredient,
That befriending yourself,
Because I had no connection to myself.
So what I thought codependency recovery was,
Was healing my relationships.
So that was my entry point.
You get to pick your entry point.
