If you were allowed to be small again.
Just for a few minutes.
Would you let yourself?
There is a part of you that learned to be older than the room.
It learned to read faces,
To anticipate,
To not need too much.
I learned this because it had to.
It did such a good job that it forgot it was a child doing it.
There is a small practice for this.
It is called offering one quiet sentence.
It is the sentence the small part of you needed to hear.
And did not.
In your own voice,
Slowly.
You did not have to be older than the room.
The small part of you can hear this.
It does not need you to explain it.
It only needs you to mean it.
Let your shoulders come down to where a child's shoulders rest.
Let your face stop reading the room.
Let your hands stop being helpful for these few minutes.
One more time quieter.
You did not have to be older than the room.
The small part of you.
Is allowed to rest inside the older one tonight.
Is being asked.
Of either of you right now.
