The question I get asked the most by people whose nervous systems are completely dysregulated because of burnout is,
Will I ever be okay?
It's a question that as a professional,
I can never give a guaranteed answer to,
But I do have a deeply heartfelt position on it based on my own lived experience.
So when I experienced severe burnout and needed to come back up for air,
It was perhaps met with more confusion by those around me than radical acceptance.
When we think of burnout recovery,
We naturally want a very need step-by-step action plan on how to fix it.
I know I did.
But what I've learned and what I hope to teach you is that everyone's action plan in their burnout recovery is different.
And that's because your circumstances are unique to you.
What worked for some may not work for you.
But one thing that binds us together as human beings in our recovery from burnout is our capacity for having emotions.
And the most overarching emotion when going through burnout recovery I have found is fear.
To do,
Fear of what's to come if we make a change in our lives,
Or fear of how our recovery will impact those around us.
But you actually need some of that fear to take the next step.
We often think of fear as a warning sign to stop.
But when you are burnt out,
Your mind and body are already in a heightened state,
Where it's so difficult to differentiate what is safe and what isn't.
So I say,
Why not take that emotion that's staying with you anyway,
And use it as fuel to pivot.
Burnout,
As painful as it is,
Is a vital piece of data.
It's your nervous system saying to you,
It's time for you now.
Embracing the fact that you want something different from your life is a gift.
If I hadn't recognized my burnout as a signal to make a pivot in my own life,
Well then I wouldn't be sitting here in front of you right now.
