Hello,
My amazing teacher friend.
Let's talk about protecting our own personal energy in a place that sometimes feels like it requires literally all of it.
Teaching is a really tricky profession because we want to bring our passion and our heart and give it our all.
But what happens when we give so much that we start to feel hollow or numbed out?
When we keep giving until our tank is empty.
That's when we can fall into empathy fatigue,
Where we're filling everything for our students and carrying their worries home with us.
Or,
On the other side of that coin,
We shut down and stop connecting altogether.
So how do we find a middle ground where we can still lead with compassion and heart,
But without draining every last bit of ourselves?
I want to tell you about a practice that helps protect your own energy while allowing you to stay fully present with your students.
I picture myself in a bubble of personal energy protection.
Sometimes it's a bubble surrounding me.
And other times it's a ball of light.
Or,
One of my personal favorites,
I imagine pulling on a metaphorical hazmat suit,
Which feels especially fitting given the petri dish we swirl around in every day.
But let's go with the bubble idea for a moment.
Picture a giant iridescent soap bubble surrounding your whole body.
Your hands and arms can reach outside of it.
That's how you do all your daily tasks that require your care and energy,
Like scribing for a student who needs help starting their ideas,
Or listening during an IEP meeting,
Or comforting your teammate with a hug.
So here's the difference when you have your bubble around you.
The energy that's yours stays yours,
And what belongs to your students stays theirs.
You can still give from your heart.
You can still care deeply.
But your energy isn't leaking out of you all day long.
Because if you let too much seep through that bubble,
Eventually it deflates.
Then you're still trying to give to everyone,
But it's from a place of depletion and lack.
It starts to feel more like panic rather than purpose.
When we give past empty.
It doesn't just affect us emotionally.
We can start feeling it physically.
Headaches.
Sleeplessness.
Muscle tension or a zombie-like autopilot mode that gets us through the day but robs us of our presence and motivation.
And zombie mode doesn't just hurt us.
It affects the energy we bring into the classroom too.
Kids are smart,
And they pick up on a lot.
So let's come back to that gentle bubble idea.
Imagine yourself moving through the day from within this beautiful contained energy space.
Everything within that bubble,
Your body,
Your breath,
Your heartbeat,
Is your personal energy.
It's your space to recharge and restore.
You can still reach out and care for others,
But the core of you stays grounded and centered and whole.
You're not absorbing everything around you.
You're actually more effective because your energy is being cared for inside that bubble.
Calm,
And steady,
Rather than scattered.
And I get it,
This probably sounds a little out there,
Walking around in a bubble.
Like,
Yeah right,
Karen,
My fatigue will be cured if I picture a bubble around me.
But remember.
Our minds are incredibly powerful.
Maybe you've heard the saying,
Where your intention goes,
Energy flows.
I'll say that again.
Where your intention goes.
Energy flows.
That's exactly what this is about.
Using intention to create boundaries that preserve your well-being.
What if practicing with a mental image of how to hold on to your own energy could cause that subtle shift you need?
Of course,
Some days your bubble is going to pop.
A student,
A meeting,
A moment.
Something will catch you off guard and leave you feeling drained.
That's totally normal.
Your power is in noticing it and imagining that protective barrier again.
The more you practice protecting your energy.
The faster you'll recognize when it's slipping,
And then the quicker you'll recover.
It's all about having the tools to help you find your way back to feeling good.
So if this idea resonates with you or even just sparks your curiosity.
I invite you to try my companion meditation that pairs with this talk called Protect Your Energy at School.
In the meditation,
You'll actually practice this visualization I'm talking about.
Learning what it feels like to move through your day grounded and steady,
Surrounded by protection that restores you.
Because protecting your energy doesn't mean you care less about your students.
It means you care sustainably.
You deserve to teach and love and lead from a place of fullness.
Whenever you're ready,
We can go practice this meditation together.
