Oh,
You're confused.
You're unsure.
How fascinating.
You think you're a unique snowflake lost in a blizzard of career choices.
You're not lost.
You're just scared of being wrong.
You want to map.
But you're standing in a forest.
Map doesn't help you if you haven't actually started walking.
You're not looking for a career.
You're looking for a guarantee that you won't fail.
Bad news,
You're going to fail.
Get on with it.
In the Zen tradition,
We don't plan for the future because.
.
.
The future is a conceptual construct.
You are obsessing over a version of you that doesn't exist yet.
Working for a job you haven't started.
Be here.
What is the next smallest,
Most mundane step you can take?
Not the big move.
The next move.
Look,
Stop waiting for bliss.
Bliss is for people who have had too many beers on a Friday Arvo.
In the real world.
You follow curiosity.
Curiosity is acquired.
Unassuming little thing.
It's not a burning fire.
It's a tiny itch to see.
How a clock works.
Or why that person talks that way.
If you're waiting for a roaring flame of passion.
You're gonna be waiting until you're retired.
Stop thinking about careers.
And start thinking about competence.
Get good at something.
It doesn't matter what.
Once you're actually good at something.
You'll find you like it a hell of a lot more.
You're not looking for your calling.
You're looking for a skill.
That you can tolerate enough to master.
You don't know what you want to do?
That puts you in the same boat as every other human being who's ever lived.
The only difference is that you are using I don't know as an excuse to sit on your hands.
In the Zen tradition,
Not knowing is the highest state of wisdom.
It's their empty spay.
Before the paint hits the canvas.
Use it.
You think your job defines you?
That's the ego talking.
You are the spay.
In which the work happens.
If the job changes,
You don't disappear.
You're just a person doing a task.
Lower the stakes.
You aren't building an empire.
You're just trying to find a way to pay the bills.
That doesn't make you want to throw yourself into traffic.
You think Steve Jobs or Oprah followed their blizz?
They followed their obsession.
They worked until their eyes bled.
They were annoying,
Driven.
And singularly focused.
You want the success without the obsession.
That's called a hobby,
Not a career.
Take a course,
Read a book,
Call someone who actually does the thing you think you might be interested in.
Stop reflecting on whether you feel alive.
You're not a teenager in a coming-of-age movie.
You're a human being who needs to act.
I'm done.
Stop finding yourself and go and find a task.
If it's boring.
You'll learn something.
If it's hard.
You'll learn something.
The only way you're going to figure it out is by hitting enough walls to see where the doors are.
Now,
Go do one thing you've been putting off because it seemed too small.
Or not your purpose.
That's your purpose.
Now move.
