If you're here because closeness feels like too much right now.
Or because you notice yourself wanting to pull away,
Shut down.
Or handle everything on your own.
This practice is for you.
You do not have to force yourself to be more open than you're ready to be.
We're simply going to create some space to notice what your nervous system may be asking for.
To get started,
Notice where you are.
Feel the support underneath your body.
Notice your feet,
Your hands,
Your breath.
And let your eyes gently take in the room around you.
There's nothing to fix.
Nothing to explain.
Just a moment to settle.
Take a slow breath in.
And a longer breath out.
Again.
Breathing in… and letting the exhale soften.
Now bring to mind a situation that feels emotionally intense.
Maybe someone wants more connection from you.
Maybe there's conflict.
Maybe you're feeling pressured to talk before you're ready.
Or maybe you simply noticed that familiar urge to withdraw.
Instead of judging that response,
See if you can become curious about it.
Ask yourself,
What am I protecting myself from right now?
Maybe it's pressure.
Being misunderstood.
Feeling trapped or disappointed.
Needing someone.
Losing or giving up control.
Or simply having more emotion than you know what to do with right now.
You don't need to force an answer.
Just notice what comes up.
Remind yourself,
Wanting space does not make me uncaring.
Needing time does not mean I am doing something wrong.
The goal is never to eliminate your need for space.
The goal is to notice whether you can have space without creating complete disconnection.
Ask yourself.
What would one small active connection look like right now?
Not a big conversation.
Not total vulnerability.
Just one degree more connection.
It might be saying,
I've overwhelmed,
And I need some time.
Or maybe.
.
.
I do want to talk about this,
But I'm not ready quite yet.
Or even,
I care about you.
I just need a little space to think.
And notice how different that feels from disappearing.
You are still honoring your need.
But you are also giving the relationship information.
Let yourself imagine saying.
I need some space right now.
And I will come back.
Breathe with that.
I need some space.
And I will come back.
You do not have to process at someone else's speed.
You do not have to stay in a conversation when you're overwhelmed.
But if the relationship is safe.
You can practice taking space while still offering connection.
Now ask,
Is there one small thing I can allow someone else to know about what is happening inside of me?
Maybe.
.
.
I'm tired.
I'm overwhelmed.
I don't yet know what I mean.
I'm having a hard day.
That may be enough.
Secure connection does not require telling someone everything.
Sometimes it simply means letting yourself be seen just a little more clearly.
Take another slow breath in.
And long breath out.
Feel the support beneath you.
And remind yourself.
I can take care of myself.
And I can let safe people care about me.
I can have boundaries,
And I can stay connected.
I can take space without abandoning myself or someone I care about.
Before we finish,
Remember these three questions.
What am I protecting myself from?
What do I need right now?
And what is one small way I can communicate that need without disappearing?

Avoidant,
Fearful avoidant,
And secure attachment,

For right now.
Take one more deep breath in.
And let it go with a sigh.
Give yourself all the space that you need.
And remember.
.
.
You do not have to choose between independence and connection.
But there can be room for both.
Take care,
My friend.
