A Psalm For The Politically Confused

When politics feels increasingly divided, confusing, and emotionally charged, it can be difficult to know what—or whom—to believe. This psalm offers a quiet space to step away from the noise and return to conscience, compassion, and discernment. Rather than telling you what to think or which side to choose, it invites you to listen more deeply, question with humility, and seek truth without losing sight of our shared humanity.

Holy One. I confess that I do not always know what to believe. Voices rise from every direction. Each certain of its own truth. Each warning me not to trust the other. I hear anger dressed as righteousness. Fear disguised as wisdom. Certainty. Where perhaps there should be. Humility. And sometimes I cannot tell the difference. Help me not surrender my conscience. Simply because someone speaks loudly. Keep me from following a crowd only because I am afraid to stand alone. When I am tempted to see people only as sides, Parties, Labels, Or enemies Return me to their humanity. Remind me that no political movement contains the whole of truth. And no human being can be reduced. To the way they vote. Give me the courage to question even those with whom I agree. Give me the humility to listen. Even to those with whom I disagree. Teach me to recognize manipulation. To pause before outrage. To seek what is true rather than what confirms what I already believe. And when truth is difficult to discern. Let compassion remain clear. May I ask? Does this protect human dignity? Does this relieve suffering? Does this honor freedom and responsibility? Does this make room for justice and mercy? This is called forth what is highest in us. Or feed what is most fearful. Holy One. I do not ask you to tell me which side to choose. I ask for something harder. Wisdom without self-righteousness. Conviction without hatred. Discernment without contempt. Courage without cruelty. Let my politics never become my religion. Let no leader become my God. Let no ideology take possession of my soul. When the world demands that I choose a camp, Help me first choose integrity. When everyone seems certain. Give me permission to remain thoughtful. And when I finally take my stand. May I do so with an open heart? A clear conscience. And enough humility to know. That I may still have something. To learn. Amen.
