If you are listening to this because you've woken up in the night and your mind has started up again,
You're in the right place.
Maybe you were sleeping peacefully,
And then,
Suddenly,
You were awake.
Perhaps you don't even know what woke you.
But now that you're awake,
Your mind has noticed.
And it has begun.
Thinking.
Remembering,
Planning,
Replaying,
Wondering.
Something from yesterday has come back.
Something waiting for you tomorrow has suddenly become urgent.
Or perhaps there isn't one particular thought at all.
Just that familiar feeling of your mind switching itself back on when all you want is to sleep.
And perhaps another thought has arrived too.
I need to get back to sleep.
Because you know what time it is.
You know how many hours are left before morning.
And perhaps you've already started calculating.
If I fall asleep now,
I'll get five hours.
If I'm still awake in half an hour,
I'll only get four and a half.
And before you know it.
Being awake has become a problem that needs to be solved.
And maybe you're annoyed with yourself now.
Why am I awake again?
Why can't I just sleep?
Why does my mind always do this?
If that's where you are tonight.
I'd like to offer you some kindness.
You're not doing the night badly.
And you're not failing at sleep.
You haven't ruined tomorrow.
Simply because you're awake right now.
There is nothing to be gained from giving yourself a hard time for something your body is doing without your permission.
So perhaps.
Just for now.
You can let yourself off the hook.
You don't have to be good at this.
And you don't have to make anything happen.
You don't have to force yourself back to sleep.
You can simply be here.
You woke up.
Your mind started again.
But you don't have to follow it.
That thought that just appeared.
You don't have to go with it.
You don't have to find out where it leads.
You don't have to answer it.
And you don't have to finish it.
A thought can simply be a thought passing through a tired mind in the middle of the night.
Nothing more.
Maybe your mind has taken you back to something that happened today.
Something you said.
A decision you made.
A moment you wish had gone differently.
Something somebody else said.
Night time.
Has a strange way of making these things feel bigger.
A conversation that seemed manageable during the day.
Can suddenly feel enormous in the darkness.
A small uncertainty.
Can begin to feel like an emergency.
But it isn't an emergency,
Simply because your mind has brought it to you now.
You can leave it where it is.
You can say quietly to yourself.
Not now.
Not because it doesn't matter,
But because I matter too.
And right now.
I'm resting.
Perhaps your mind has gone in the other direction.
Into tomorrow.
Who you have to speak to.
What might happen.
What might go wrong.
How you'll manage if you're tired.
Tomorrow can become very crowded when we visit it in the middle of the night.
So you don't have to visit it.
Tomorrow will come to you.
You don't have to go looking for it.
There will be time for decisions.
There will be time for conversations.
There will be time for lists and plans and figuring things out.
But this is not that time.
This is the quiet space between one day and the next.
And nothing is asking you to have all the answers here.
You are allowed to leave some things unknown.
You're allowed to leave some things unfinished.
You are allowed to trust that you will meet tomorrow when tomorrow arrives.
And if you notice yourself thinking again.
That's all right.
There's no test here.
The mind thinks.
That's what minds do.
You don't have to fight with it.
You don't have to force it to become silent.
You don't have to chase every thought away.
Perhaps you could simply imagine that each thought is an invitation.
And you are allowed to decline.
Your mind says,
What about tomorrow?
And you can answer.
Not now.
Your mind says.
But what about that thing that happened?
Not now.
What if something goes wrong?
Now.
You're not trying to get rid of the thoughts.
You're simply choosing not to travel with them.
And perhaps.
There is something else you can notice instead.
The warm bed beneath you.
The weight of your body being held.
The cozy darkness around you.
And the quiet sounds of the night.
You don't have to change your breathing.
You don't have to relax every muscle.
You don't have to do anything perfectly.
Perhaps your body can simply be exactly as it is.
Your shoulders may soften.
Your jaw may loosen.
Your hands may become a little heavier.
Or perhaps.
.
.
Nothing changes at all.
That's all right too.
Rest.
Rest doesn't have to look a particular way.
And this matters.
Because sleep is not the only kind thing your body can receive tonight.
Rest matters too.
Lying here quietly matters.
Closing your eyes and allowing your body to be still matters.
Giving your muscles a little less to do matters.
Giving your mind.
Permission to stop working on tomorrow.
Matters.
You don't have to dismiss this time as wasted simply because you're awake.
Your body is still being given a pause from the day.
You're still sheltered from all the things that normally ask for your attention.
There's no email to answer here.
No conversations to manage.
No decisions that have to be made in this moment.
You are resting.
Perhaps not in the way you hoped.
Perhaps not asleep yet.
But resting nonetheless.
And that counts.
So if a part of you is saying,
This is terrible,
I'm getting no sleep.
Perhaps another kinder voice can answer.
I'm awake now.
And I'm still resting.
If your mind says tomorrow's going to be awful.
Perhaps you can leave tomorrow alone.
You don't know how tomorrow will feel yet.
You don't know what energy may return.
You don't know when sleep may come.
You don't need to predict the whole day from this one moment in the night.
This moment.
Is not tomorrow.
This moment is simply this moment.
And right now.
You are allowed to rest.
There is no prize for worrying about being awake.
No benefit in scolding yourself.
No kindness in telling yourself that you should be asleep by now.
So perhaps we can take the word should out of the night altogether.
All the shoulds should be asleep,
Should be able to switch off,
Should stop thinking,
Should have gone to bed earlier.
No,
None of that is needed here.
Simple kindness to allow yourself.
Be simply awake for a little while.
You could allow your body to rest.
You could speak to yourself as you would speak to somebody you cared about who was tired and worried.
You wouldn't tell them they were making a mess of sleeping.
He wouldn't tell them tomorrow was ruined.
You wouldn't demand that they relax immediately.
You might simply say.
It's alright.
You're tired.
You're awake.
You don't have to do anything about it right now.
Just rest here.
Perhaps you can offer some of those words to yourself.
Because you deserve your own kindness too.
Especially at this hour.
Especially when you're tired.
Especially when everything feels.
A little more difficult than it does in daylight.
Even being here,
Lying quietly.
Is different from fighting with the night.
There's nothing you need to achieve before you're allowed to rest.
Nothing you need to understand.
Nothing you need to forgive yourself for before morning.
Nothing you need to fix before you close your eyes again.
This day has already been lived.
And you did what you could with what you knew and what you had.
And now.
It can be finished.
Not perfectly,
Maybe.
Not neatly tied up.
Simply finished for tonight.
And tomorrow.
Tomorrow does not need you yet.
Think about that for a moment.
Tomorrow does not need you yet.
The people you may speak to tomorrow don't need you right now.
The work waiting for you doesn't need you right now.
The decisions waiting to be made.
Don't need you right now.
This moment belongs to you.
And perhaps the kindest thing you can do is stop asking yourself to live tomorrow before it arrives.
You can trust yourself to meet it when it comes.
You've met difficult mornings before.
You've met uncertain days before.
You've worked things out before.
Sometimes slowly.
Sometimes imperfectly.
Sometimes with help.
But you have been through all of those and still arrived here.
You don't need to know tonight how everything will unfold.
Life can hold some of the uncertainty for you.
And perhaps.
.
.
That is what trust can mean tonight.
Not believing that everything will happen exactly as you want it to.
Not promising yourself that nothing difficult will happen.
Just knowing that you don't have to prepare for every possibility while you're lying here in the dark.
You can let life carry some of the weight.
And now I'd like to give you a few words to hold you.
One human heart speaking gently to another.
You don't need to repeat them.
You don't need to remember them.
Just let them come to you.
And if one feels comforting.
Perhaps let that be the one you keep.
I am safe in this moment.
Nothing needs to be solved right now.
I can let today be over.
Tomorrow can wait for me.
I don't have to follow every thought.
I can leave some things unfinished.
Can leave some things unknown.
I don't need to criticize myself for being awake.
I can be kind to myself tonight.
My body can rest even while I'm awake.
Quiet rest has value.
I trust myself to meet tomorrow when it comes.
I can let life carry some of the weight.
Rest.
Is enough.
This moment.
Asks nothing of me.
I am allowed to be still.
I am allowed to let go.
And perhaps.
Somewhere among all those words,
There's something that feels right for you tonight.
Keep that one.
If another thought comes,
You don't have to follow it.
If tomorrow calls you,
You can let it wait.
If yesterday comes looking for you.
You can leave it where it belongs.
And if you notice that you're still awake.
There's no disappointment needed.
You have been resting.
You have been giving yourself quiet.
You have been allowing the night to hold you for a while.
And that's not nothing.
You don't need to check whether sleep is coming.
You don't need to measure how relaxed you feel.
You don't need to ask yourself whether this is working.
There's nothing to get right.
Your hair in this bed.
In this moment.
And for now.
.
.
This moment.
Is enough.
And you don't have to make sleep happen.
You don't have to try Just stay here for a little while.
Let the night be quiet around you.
Let your body be held.
Let your thoughts come and go without taking you with them.
And if sleep finds you again.
You can go with it.
If it takes a little longer.
You can rest here without blaming yourself.
Either way.
Yeah.
Can be gentle with yourself tonight.
You woke up.
Your mind started again.
But you don't have to follow it.
Good night
