You got through the day.
You answered the questions.
You dealt with what needed dealing with.
You remembered things for other people.
You kept going when you were tired.
And perhaps nobody noticed quite how much it took.
But now you're here.
And for the next little while.
Nobody needs anything from you.
You don't have to be capable here.
You don't have to have the answer.
You don't have to keep everything moving.
You have been strong enough today.
I'm Tara and this is Words to Hold You.
A quiet place for emotional reassurance when your mind won't rest.
One human heart.
Speaking gently to another.
So for a little while.
Let this be the place where you put things down.
Not forever.
Just for tonight.
Maybe you're the person people rely on.
The one who remembers.
The one who sorts things out.
The one who notices what needs doing before anybody asks.
At work,
You keep things moving.
At home.
You know what's in the fridge,
What appointment is coming up,
Who needs a lift,
Who needs a reply.
What Bill needs paying.
And perhaps you're proud of that.
There's nothing wrong with being capable or caring.
Or someone others can depend on.
But even dependable people get tired.
Even strong people need somewhere they don't have to be strong.
Even the person who carries things for everyone else needs,
Sometimes,
To feel that they can put the bags down.
Maybe that's what tonight can be.
Not another task.
Not another thing to get right.
Just somewhere to put the bags down.
You may still be thinking about tomorrow.
Something you forgot.
Something you haven't finished.
Something you promised.
The mind can be very loyal to unfinished things.
It keeps them nearby,
As if letting go for a few hours might mean losing them completely.
But you don't have to keep everything in your hands in order to remember it tomorrow.
You are allowed to leave something unfinished.
There will almost always be something unfinished,
An email unanswered,
A room not tidied.
A decision not made.
A human life is rarely neatly completed by bedtime.
You don't have to have everything neatly finished before you're allowed to rest.
Because sometimes rest then becomes another thing we think we have to earn.
I'll sit down when it's done.
I'll relax when everyone else is okay.
I'll go to bed when I've caught up.
But there's always something else.
If rest only comes when everything is finished,
It may wait a very long time.
So perhaps tonight we can change the rule.
Rest is not a reward for completing everything.
It's part of being human.
You're tired.
And that is enough.
You don't need a better reason to rest.
Maybe nothing dramatic happened today.
Sometimes.
The exhausting days are the ones made of a hundred small demands.
A message that needed an answer.
Someone needing reassurance.
A change of plan.
A decision you didn't want to make.
None of them enormous.
But together they can fill every little space inside you.
And then the day becomes quiet.
The phone stops.
The door closes,
The lights go out.
And suddenly you notice how tired you are.
Sometimes the body waits until it feels safe enough to tell the truth.
I'm tired.
I've had enough for today.
I don't want anyone to ask me anything.
If that's where you are tonight.
There is nothing selfish about it.
You are a person.
Not an emergency service.
You can love the people who needed you today and still be tired.
You can be grateful for your life and still need a break from its demands.
You can care deeply and still want silence.
Those things don't cancel one another out.
Maybe you've become so accustomed to coping that you barely notice.
It's fine,
I'll do it.
Leave it with me.
But being able to carry something does not mean you always have to carry it.
Strength is not measured by how long you can go without putting anything down.
Sometimes strength is recognizing that you have reached the end of what you can reasonably give in one day.
Today has had enough of you.
And you have given enough to today.
Whatever remains can meet you tomorrow.
Perhaps part of you is saying.
But if I stop,
Things will fall apart.
And maybe some things do depend on you.
But do they depend on you right now in this bed?
Or is your mind still standing at its post?
Because it's forgotten that the shift is over.
You can tell it gently.
We're off duty now.
Not forever.
Just for tonight.
Tonight does not need the daytime version of you.
The efficient one.
The organized one.
You can let that version of you sit down.
And perhaps there's a quieter part underneath all that competence.
The part that sometimes wants someone else to say.
I've got this.
You can rest.
Maybe you don't hear those words very often.
So let me say them to you now.
For this little while.
You don't have to think about it.
You don't have to sort anything out.
You can rest.
There's nothing you need to give me,
Explain or do in return.
You can simply receive a little kindness.
That may feel unfamiliar.
People who are very good at giving.
Often find receiving difficult.
We know how to offer the cup of tea.
We know how to check that someone got home safely.
We know how to ask,
Are you okay?
And then somebody asks us the same question.
We say,
I'm Grant.
And maybe you are.
But being fine does not mean you do not need care.
Capable.
Does not make you less deserving of tenderness.
You do not have to be falling apart before you are allowed to be looked after.
Tonight.
Being looked after can simply mean not asking anything more of yourself.
No improvement project.
No review of how well you handled the day.
You've spent enough time being useful.
Now you can simply be.
Maybe you're still carrying another person's feelings,
Someone you're worried about.
Someone whose problem you can't fix.
Caring can make us reach beyond what is ours to carry.
Until their difficulty has moved into our mind and made itself comfortable.
Perhaps tonight.
You can return a little of what does not belong to you.
Not because you don't care.
But because you do.
Love does not require you to stay awake,
Carrying another adult's whole life inside your head.
You can care about them and let them have their own path.
You can care about them and sleep.
Tomorrow can have your attention tomorrow.
You don't have to pay tomorrow in advance.
Tonight belongs here.
And maybe your mind is making a list now.
That's what minds do when we tell them they can stop.
They suddenly remember three more things.
You don't have to argue with it.
Yes,
There are things to do.
And still this day is finished.
Yes,
There are people to respond to and still you are allowed to rest.
Yes,
Life will need you again.
But it does not need you every second.
There can be a space where you are not producing,
Helping,
Fixing,
Organizing,
Anticipating or coping.
A space.
Where your only job is to exist.
You were a person before you were useful to anyone.
Before the job title.
Before the responsibilities.
Before the list.
Your worth was never created by how much you could manage.
And it does not disappear.
When you stop managing for a while.
You are still worthy when the kitchen is untidy.
You're still worthy when somebody is disappointed.
You're still worthy when you say no.
You're still worthy when you need help.
You are still worthy when you're tired and have nothing left to offer tonight.
There's nothing you have to achieve in the next few minutes to become deserving of rest.
You already are.
Maybe today you were not at your best.
Perhaps you were impatient or forgot something.
That happens.
A tired day is allowed to look like a tired day.
You can begin again tomorrow without putting yourself on trial tonight.
And if today went beautifully?
You still get to rest.
You can stop before you're empty.
You can say no before resentment sets in.
You can ask for help before you can't cope.
You can rest before your body has to demand it.
Not because you're weak.
Because you belong in the life you are taking care of.
You belong on your own list.
Maybe not at the top every minute,
But somewhere.
And tonight,
Perhaps you can move yourself gently upwards to the top of that list.
For these few moments.
There's nobody ahead of you.
No one whose needs are more urgent.
You can be the one receiving the care.
Let the day become a little more distant now.
Not erased,
Just farther away.
The tasks can lose their sharp edges.
The things you forgot.
Can wait without accusing you.
You're not required to hold the day together after it has ended.
As a difference between being needed.
And being responsible for everything.
You may be needed.
You may be loved.
You may matter enormously to people.
And still.
You are not responsible for everything.
You can't prevent every difficulty.
You can't keep everyone happy.
You can't protect everyone you love from every painful thing.
No human being can.
You're allowed to have human-sized shoulders.
Enough for what is truly yours.
And permission to set down what is not.
Maybe you've been carrying something for so long.
You no longer know whether it belongs to you.
And expectation.
A role.
The belief that you must always be the sensible one.
The peacekeeper.
The dependable one.
Perhaps you learned somewhere along the way that being loved and being useful belonged together.
That you were safest when you were helpful.
Easy.
Competent.
If that feels familiar.
You don't have to untangle it tonight.
Just let yourself hear this.
You do not have to earn your place here by taking care of everyone.
You do not have to earn love by exhausting yourself.
You do not have to earn rest at all.
Rest is not a prize.
It's part of life.
And maybe sleep comes soon.
Or maybe it takes a little while.
We don't need to turn that into another performance.
You have performed enough today.
You don't have to be good at resting.
You don't have to make your mind perfectly quiet.
You can simply.
.
.
Stop doing.
And that is enough.
If thoughts keep arriving,
Let them arrive.
You don't have to pick each one up.
Some thoughts are simply the mind emptying its pockets at the end of the day.
A receipt?
A key?
A reminder?
A worry?
A thing you nearly forgot.
They can lie there until morning.
Nothing needs filing and nothing needs fixing.
You did enough.
But not everything.
Enough.
You gave enough.
But not endlessly.
Enough.
You are strong enough.
And you do not have to prove it again tonight.
And if part of you says,
But I could have done more.
Of course you could have.
There's nearly always more a person could do.
That does not mean more was required.
Perhaps tonight can be the point where enough means enough.
The day does not need another hour from you.
You can close the door on it gently.
Not slam it.
Not deny it.
Just close it.
Tomorrow can knock when tomorrow arrives.
For now.
Nobody needs anything from you here.
You can stop listening for your name.
You can stop anticipating the next request.
You can stop being ready.
The world can continue without your supervision.
You are important.
But you don't have to be indispensable.
Being loved.
Is not the same as being needed every moment.
You can be loved while doing absolutely nothing.
You can matter.
While you're asleep.
You can belong.
While you're resting.
Perhaps we can let the words become quieter now.
Nothing more to work out.
Nothing more to learn.
Just some words to hold you for the end of the day.
You don't have to repeat them.
Just listen and if one feels like something you need tonight.
Let it stay with you.
I've done enough for today.
I don't have to finish everything before I rest.
I'm allowed to leave things for tomorrow.
I can stop being the capable one for a while.
Nobody needs anything from me here.
I can let other people carry what belongs to them.
I can care without carrying everything.
I'm allowed to be tired.
Rest is not something I have to earn.
I am worthy when I'm helping.
And I'm worthy when I'm resting.
I'm allowed to say no.
I'm allowed to have limits.
My limits do not make me difficult.
My tiredness does not make me weak.
I can be kind to the part of me that has been trying so hard.
I don't have to hold everything together.
I can belong without performing.
I can matter without producing.
Eye.
Can be love.
Without exhausting myself.
I have been strong enough today.
I am enough tonight.
And now.
I can rest.
Maybe there are still things waiting for you tomorrow.
They can wait.
Maybe somebody will need you again.
You can meet them when the new day comes.
But right now.
You're not late for anything.
And you're not behind here.
The day has already received what you had to give it.
Let that be enough for this little while.
Let yourself be held.
Nothing to organize.
Nothing to prove.
Nothing to carry.
Just this quiet permission to stop.
You have been strong enough today.
You don't have to be strong for the night.
Rest now.
Good night.
