Sound Bath Sessions 206: Marzie Chai

I flew to Kaohsiung from Korea, and the next morning, Marzie was my first session in Taiwan. The weather was much warmer, and the parts of the city that I wandered around were much quieter than the places where I had just been.

Marzie runs the Shinsekai Wellness Space, a vegan café in the Yancheng District. She holds wellness events in the basement, including her sound bath sessions.

Marzie played two 'Fuxing' monochords designed and made by her sister in Taiwan, tubular chimes, and a Wave instrument.

I put the microphone under the monochord for this session to mimic the position a person would lie in one of her sessions. She walks around the room with a shaker and rainstick to introduce the limits of the space. The higher sounds are more muted below the monochord, and the harmonic 'ghost' voices can also be heard. When she puts the shaker beside our ear, it gives an amazing sense of scale and detail.
