Dawn Chorus (Early Morning Bird Song)
by Ryan Garner
I was recently staying in a hotel next to a quant canal in Stourport, UK. I like to sleep with the window open to let in a cool, gentle breeze. In the early hours of the morning, I was awoken by the fantastic natural orchestra known as "The Dawn Chorus". On hearing this, I immediately got my recording gear out and set it up on the balcony area outside the room & proceeded to go back to sleep for a while before I headed to work. There was this overwhelming symphony of different birds singing in unison, and I simply had to try to capture that. The Dawn Chorus is usually kicked off in the early hours by Robins, Blackbirds and Thrushes. These birds in particular seem to like an early vocal warm up. This awakens all of the other birds nearby, and they quickly take their places in the composition. Eventually, the air is filled with a cacophony of chirping, whistling, clicking and whooping that should, by rights, sound chaotic, but is beautiful, soothing and powerful instead.
