Cranford, Chapter 2 - Captain Brown
by Mandy Sutter
Relax and enjoy listening to this second chapter of Elizabeth Gaskell's classic novel, which deals with the Brown family: the Captain and his two daughters. Two deaths occur in this chapter so please don't listen if you think this may upset you. You can pick up the story again in Chapter 3: These chapters stand alone as individual sketches of small-town Victorian life. If you are happy to listen, you will enjoy hearing how Miss Matty, Miss Pole, and the narrator rally round to help, how Miss Jenkyns comes good, and how kind the townspeople are to one another. Even in the thick of tragic events, Gaskell introduces notes of humor and describes examples of human fallibility to make us smile.
