This is about mastery.
Over your money,
Your mind,
And yourself.
If you're an overthinker,
You've probably told yourself a thousand times.
I need to stop thinking about this and then continued thinking about it.
That's because worrying isn't completely irrational.
Your brain is attempting to protect you.
It creates scenarios,
Predicts problems and searches for solutions because uncertainty is uncomfortable.
The problem begins when problem solving turns into rumination.
There's an important difference.
Problem-solving produces action.
Rumination produces another thought.
You replay the conversation,
Imagine what somebody might say,
Think about what could happen tomorrow.
That creates another scenario based on that scenario.
It can feel productive because your brain is extremely active,
But nothing is actually being resolved.
So next time you catch yourself doing this,
Ask yourself.
Is there a problem here that I can solve right now?
If yes,
Identify the next physical action.
Send the email.
Make the phone call.
Write something down.
Have the conversation.
If there isn't an action available,
Recognise what's happening.
Your brain is asking you for certainty that you cannot give up.
Tray settings I don't know what's going to happen and I don't need to know right now.
That might initially feel uncomfortable,
But learning to tolerate uncertainty is often far more effective than trying to eliminate it.
You don't master your mind by controlling every thought that enters it.
You master it by deciding what thoughts deserve your attention.
Master yourself first,
Everything else follows.
