Welcome to this space.
Find a comfortable position.
Allow your eyes to gently close or maintain a soft,
Unfocused gaze toward the floor.
We'll begin by signaling to your nervous system that right now,
In this moment,
You are safe.
Take a deep,
Full breath in through your nose,
Filling your abdomen.
And exhale slowly and completely through your mouth,
Releasing any accumulated tension.
Once more,
Inhale deeply.
And exhale slowly,
Making your breath out noticeably longer than your breath in.
By extending your exhalation,
You stimulate the vagus nerve,
Lowering your heart rate and sending a direct signal to your brain that there is no immediate danger.
Now,
Bring your awareness into your physical body.
Notice where self-blame might be holding space physically.
Perhaps as a knot in your stomach,
A tightness in your chest,
A clenched jaw,
Or raised shoulders.
Don't try to change anything just yet.
Simply observe with conscious curiosity without judging the sensation.
Guilt and harsh self-criticism are learned biological responses.
When something goes wrong or falls short of your expectations,
Your brain activates its default mode network and amygdala,
Searching for what went wrong to protect you in the future.
Self-blame is not a reflection of who you are.
It is simply an ancient mechanism your brain uses to try to regain control.
Inhale gently.
And as you exhale,
Repeat silently in your mind.
My brain is trying to protect me.
But today,
I choose to lay this burden down.
Acknowledge that punishing yourself mentally hasn't fixed the past.
It has only kept the stress response active in your body.
Let's give your mind a healthier way to process this experience.
Bring to mind or sense the inner critic,
That inner voice repeating judgments,
Expectations,
Or self-reproach.
Observe how that voice sounds in your mind.
Where in or around your head does it sound loudest?
What is its tone?
Is it fast,
Harsh,
Heavy,
Or accusing?
Now,
Using your mind's ability to shift the structure of your thoughts,
You're going to make a technical adjustment.
Take that voice and begin to move it.
Shift it mentally outside of your head,
Placing it two meters,
About six feet,
Away from you.
Turn down the volume of that voice by half.
Now,
Alter its speed.
Make it speak very slowly,
Almost in extreme slow motion.
Or change its tone to a silly or robotic cartoon voice.
Feel how changing the format of the thought weakens its emotional weight in your body.
The voice loses its authority.
It becomes just sound without substance.
Gently place one hand over the center of your chest,
Resting right over your heart space.
Feel the warmth of your palm against your skin or clothing.
This physical touch triggers the release of oxytocin,
Soothing your nervous system and cultivating connection.
Inhale deeply into the area beneath your hand.
As you exhale,
Soften the area around your heart.
Imagine that the space once tightened by blame is now becoming soft,
Spacious,
And open.
Repeat these statements silently,
Letting them resonate through your body.
I did the best I could with the level of awareness and resources I had at that moment.
I can learn from my mistakes without needing to punish myself.
I allow myself to be human.
I allow myself to soften.
Feel the texture of compassion.
It is not weakness.
But the emotional wisdom that allows you to heal so you can move forward with clarity.
Gently lower your hand back down to rest on your lap.
Take a full,
Deep breath in,
Feeling fresh energy renew every cell in your body.
Bring your awareness back to the physical points of contact.
Your body against the chair or bed,
Your feet on the ground,
Your hands resting softly.
Begin to gently wiggle your fingers and toes.
When you are ready,
At your own pace,
Slowly open your eyes.
Bringing this feeling of lightness,
Space,
And self-compassion back into your day.
