Testosterone is getting a lot of attention in the menopause conversation right now,
And I welcome it.
For far too long,
Women's sexual health has been understudied,
Undertreated,
Misunderstood.
Women experiencing distressing low sexual desire deserve more research,
More attention,
More treatment options.
So does testosterone help with desire for many women?
Yes.
There's solid evidence that testosterone can improve sexual desire in some postmenopausal women experiencing hypoactive sexual desire or HSDD.
But here's where the conversation gets more complicated.
A woman's blood level of testosterone doesn't tell us whether she has low desire or whether she will benefit from testosterone treatment.
And that's because sexual desire has never been just about hormones.
Hormones matter,
But sexual response is also influenced by pain,
Medications,
Health conditions,
Stress,
Mood,
Attention,
Body image,
Relationships,
Past experiences,
Beliefs about sex,
Culture,
And what's happening in our lives.
The brain and body aren't separate when it comes to sexual response.
They interact.
And that's why treatment doesn't have to be testosterone or something else.
Testosterone may be appropriate for another.
Addressing pain may be the priority.
Another may benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy or mindfulness.
And many women may benefit from more than one approach.
I'm really glad the FDA is having this conversation,
But testosterone receives more attention.
I hope we don't replace one overly simple explanation.
It's just menopause with another.
It's just testosterone.
Women deserve to understand all of their treatment options.
