Make sure that you sit comfortably with your spine erect and both feet firmly planted on the ground.
Or if you are doing this meditation while laying down,
Make sure that your spine is in a straight line.
Stretch a little if you like,
Especially your back and your shoulders and your neck.
And close your eyes if you are comfortable to do so.
Or gaze towards your lap and then take three really deep breaths.
In through your nose and out through your mouth.
Allowing yourself to soften and relax on the out breath.
Let go of your thoughts of the past and the future and allow your muscles to relax.
And after three deep breaths,
Return to your normal breathing rhythm.
Using the falling and rising of your chest.
And whenever a sound or a thought distracts you away from your breath,
Just smile at how easily we get distracted and bring your awareness back to your breath.
And now imagine that you are at sea in a very small boat and all around you is a raging storm.
The waves are so high,
Potentially it's even dark all around you.
The boat is crashing down the waves.
The ship is rolling and pitching.
The rain beats down on the deck.
Hear the howling of the wind.
The rain on your face.
See the stormy sea.
Feel how you're wrestling with the wheel of the boat.
The exhaustion in your muscles.
Doing all you can to stay afloat.
To survive.
Now in the distance you see a dazzling light shining.
It's a lighthouse and it has a steady radiant beam that is guiding you through this storm.
You feel a huge relief while you welcome this guiding light.
Now you know where to steer,
Which direction to take your boat in.
Concentrate on the lighthouse,
This beacon of hope.
And rejoice in how it is helping people everywhere who have lost their way.
To give guidance to all who need it.
Notice the relief in your body.
The hope in your heart.
The trust that even though this is hard and scary,
But that all will be well.
So even though the storm is raging,
The wind is howling,
The rain is falling.
The lighthouse stands solid and shines.
Nothing can shake it.
So whatever is going on in your life right now,
Whichever storms are raging,
Remember the lighthouse.
Solid guiding you in the right direction.
Shining a light in the darkness.
Guiding you.
After a while let this visualization gradually subside.
Yet keep within you this sense of shining strength,
Stability in the eye of the storm.
Take that inner feeling with you that this lighthouse represents.
And very slowly becoming aware of your breath again,
Noticing the space around you,
Hearing the sounds,
And very slowly in your own time opening your eyes.
And welcome back.
