Aegean Mermaids & Western Boys
One of my favorite experiences in my life was when I was 23 years old. I was living in Prague and had just hitchhiked to Amsterdam to sell literature and art magazines. I was tired of the city and needed a break, so I decided to fly to Turkey. I would spend two months there, and during that time I met my friend, Daniel, from Australia. He convinced me to travel with him to a small Turkish town on the Aegean and then to hike through a Greek ghost village over a mountain to a place on the other side. There, we slept outside for two weeks, on a piece of rock jutting out into the Aegean Sea. Leaping into the sea from the rocks, swimming in the sea cave across from us, eating vegetables we bought from the local villagers' gardens, making tree art from bones and driftwood, napping through the hot Mediterranean afternoons and playing with the mermaids who lived there at night. I'll leave it up to you to decide if the mermaids were real or imaginary. To me, they will always be a bit of both.
