What if aging well was less about luck and more about what you know and what you do?
I'm Dr.
Linda Friedland,
And this is the Longevity Blueprint.
What if one process in your body was driving heart disease,
Cognitive decline,
Your risk of cancer,
And accelerated aging all at the same time?
Well,
There is such a process and many people don't know much about how it works.
It's inflammation,
And with aging it's called inflammation.
Understanding it may be one of the most important things you can do for your long-term health and your longevity.
Inflammation itself in the body is not the enemy.
In fact,
It's essential.
When your body detects a threat,
A virus or a bacteria,
Or you develop an injury,
You cut yourself.
Your immune system sends inflammatory cells to the area.
They release these proteins called cytokines,
Which neutralize the damage and the danger.
Once the threat is gone,
The process switches off.
And that's inflammation,
Acute inflammation,
Working exactly as it should.
The problem is when it doesn't switch off.
Sometimes your body continues sending out these inflammatory signals long after the danger has passed.
These excess chemicals begin by attacking healthy tissue instead.
And over time this low-grade chronic silent inflammation causes damage across virtually every system in the body.
This is what scientists call inflammation,
A term first coined by Professor Claudio Franceschi at the University of Bologna.
And it's now recognized as one of the central hallmarks of biological aging.
Why is it so significant?
It's not just a disease,
One disease pathway or one system.
Chronic low-grade inflammation is linked to these,
To cardiovascular disease,
To type 2 diabetes,
To cognitive decline,
To autoimmune conditions,
Certain cancers,
And accelerated biological aging at a cellular level.
Simply getting older increases it.
As we age,
Our damaged cells release this cocktail of inflammatory chemicals,
Creating a vicious cycle of more damage,
More inflammation,
More decline.
The worse the inflammation,
The faster the aging process.
But,
And this is the important part,
Lifestyle has an extraordinary ability to interrupt that cycle.
There's six strategies that actually work.
There's no medicine,
No magic bullet for chronic inflammation.
The most powerful interventions are behavioral,
And the evidence behind them is strong.
Firstly,
Nutritional.
Is foundational.
Highly processed foods actively fuel this inflammation.
An anti-inflammatory diet rich in fresh vegetables,
Good fats,
Quality protein does the opposite.
Think avocado,
Leafy greens,
Berries,
Olive oil,
Fatty fish.
Aim for at least 80% of your diet coming from these whole foods.
Movement is the second one.
It's the closest thing that we have to a magic bullet.
A recent publication in Nature looked at four massive studyings at both cardio and strength training,
And both of these significantly reduced inflammatory markers,
Including cytokines and what's called C-reactive protein.
Exercise is medicine and inflammation can be managed.
Calorie deficit matters too.
The deep visceral fat around our organs is one of the primary sites of inflammatory activation in the body.
Not the superficial fat,
But deep fat.
Reducing it through mindful eating and some degree of caloric awareness is a powerful strategy.
The gut microbiome,
Which you can watch another episode,
Plays a big role in inflammation.
Fermented foods,
Fiber-rich plant foods,
Probiotic yogurt,
Kefir,
Miso,
Kimchi,
All support this microbial balance and a lower inflammatory load in your gut.
There are some supplements,
Micronutrients,
Vitamin D and zinc have emerged as key modulators of immune function.
A significant proportion of older adults are deficient in both of these.
It's worth checking your levels and supplementing vitamin D and zinc.
And stress,
Chronic unmanaged stress,
Shortens your telomeres,
Your DNA protective caps,
And accelerates cellular aging and this inflammation.
There was an interesting study in Frontiers in Immunology,
Important journal,
1600 participants across 20 trials.
Found that meditation and mindfulness produce measurable reductions in inflammatory markers.
Calming the mind,
It turns out,
Calms the biology too.
So what can you take away from this talk?
Inflammaging is not inevitable,
It's not fixed,
And you don't need a prescription to address it.
Every meal,
Every workout,
Every meditation,
Every good sleep.
These are all anti-inflammatory acts.
The science of longevity keeps returning to the same truth.
The most powerful medicine and anti-aging is often how we live.
This is the Longevity Blueprint here on Insight Timer.
Until next time,
Age boldly,
Live well and make smart choices.
