John Weddepohl has dedicated his life to the teachings of Atma Vidya - Self-knowledge. Studying in India in the lineage of Adi Shankara over 7 years, mandated by his teachers to share the oldest teachings of humankind, John has been sharing Self-knowledge, the wisdom teaching of the Veda/Upanishads in the west ever since.
In 1969 John took to yoga like a fish to water. Meeting yoga and his first teacher at nineteen, tasked with teaching and leading the meditation within ten days, it was like he’d never stopped. Besides a brief time as a family householder, it is all he has been doing ever since.
Now, teaching globally, John is the primary teacher of Self-knowledge in English in the west. The teaching of Self is the oldest, rarest, most sacred teaching of humankind and the Vedas. Taught only in sanskrit; a password or code language of the vedas, modern revivalists after translating the teaching into English, are making it accessible in the West for the first time.
Rare it is to question existence. Rarer still is to find a teacher and have those questions answered. Finding out the answer is none other than oneself, in Self-knowledge, Atma Vidya, we explode the secret of the universe and get the Grand Prize. Once we have gained the knowledge of ourselves, knowledge of the knower,, we have reached the end of knowledge - Vedanta. No longer feeling like a missing piece in the universe, our life becomes a grand revelry, revelling and basking in the glory of nothing but oneself....
Lektion 1
Crisis As A Sacred Turning Point
What are we prepared to give up in a crisis? What do we hang on to? How does crisis become the turning point and gift in our lives? In this first lesson, we become acquainted with the nature of crisis, how it represents the most sacred moment in our lives. We are also introduced to the language of Self through the word 'I,' not as a name we take ourselves to be but as something far greater. Practical examples then illustrate the essence of loss, and the profound experience of finding it again.
Lektion 2
The Power Of Knowledge
In this lesson, we delve deeper into the nature of "I". We explore the root cause of emotions and examine the power, challenge, and purpose of individuality. Our journey also involves exploring the dance between ignorance and knowledge, with knowledge being the key to shifting our relationship with crisis. Additionally, we reconsider what it means to be complete and emphasise once more the role of crisis in facilitating growth
Lektion 3
The Role Of Teacher And Student
In this lesson we unpack our most prized possession; Ourselves and discover why who we are is never lost, always present. We also learn that our presence is implicit in any challenge and how our presence is also the solution to any crisis. The role of teacher and student are discussed and how the teacher in order to resolve any crisis uses words as the means of knowledge to reveal the solution.
Lektion 4
Moving Beyond Crisis
In this lesson we look at the power and meaning behind the word "I". We deconstruct the nature of thoughts, the ego and happiness in more detail and learn the story of the Musk deer and why this allegory is so meaningful in moving beyond crisis. The teaching of Upanishadic wisdom called Self-Knowledge and its traditional application as a means to know oneSelf is also explained.
Lektion 5
Self The Definer
In our final lesson, we delve into the distinction between knowledge and information, explore the genuine nature of happiness, and learn how self defines everything. At the end of the lesson we reflect back on crisis as the most sacred point in our lives and are hopefully inspired to ask more questions and learn more about ourselves in the teaching of Atma Vidya. Self-Knowledge.
