We'll share how our prehistoric evolved stress response, neurobiology and environmental conditioning, causes us stress, to develop unhealthy habits and creates a sense of separation from others. From being connected. And through personal stories, real world examples and guided mindfulness meditations, we'll share memorable ways to recall and re-connect with the timeless space of being, overcoming these barriers to enjoy healthier, happier and more fulfilling connection.

It begins when you "Overcome The Six Barriers to Being"
Derek Hill believes in creating opportunities for genuine connection, with ourselves, nature, and each other. Supporting people to look inwardly, with self-compassion - helping them uncover their inner resources for self-support and purposeful direction in life.
He is a mindfulness and compassion teacher, speaker, and coach, accredited by Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). He teaches 4 to 8-week courses, including Jon Kabat-Zinn's gold standard "Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction." He works with individuals, groups, and organizations to inspire greater happiness, health, and human connection in life and work. Derek's course ‘Waves of Wellbeing and Resilience’ was drawn from both his teaching qualifications, as well his own personal life and professional experiences.
He has coached and mentored people for 20 years in high-stress corporate environments, as well as purpose-driven ‘technology for good’ organizations like JustGiving and Farewill, where he spent many wonderful years working with not-for-profit organizations. Derek is sincerely committed to helping others realize their potential, creativity, and fundamental connection to self, others, and the universe.
Derek moved to London from his hometown in Dublin. His early life in Ireland colored so much of what he has learned throughout life. Having graduated in creative writing, he always found great inspiration in the books of others, whether fictional, philosophical, or those challenging conventions.
Throughout his professional career, where he enjoyed the highs and lows of working abroad, growing businesses, and making a purposeful impact, there was always a pull towards the traditions and philosophies, which inspire his work today. A few life-changing events and an ever-growing personal commitment to meditation practice, finally nudged him to retrain as a mindfulness and compassion teacher, picking up a CPCAB accredited Level 4 qualification, as well as training to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
Derek then redesigned his life around a passion and purpose, so he could sustainably support his health and well-being and that of his family. He founded his company Waking Waves to make this possible and is now on his own mindful mission to share the benefits of mindfulness and compassion with others, so they can too....
Lektion 1
Busy Mind To Being Mind
In Day 1, we explore how our modern world and habits of the mind condition us for distraction, even when there is little to be done. We bring this to life through some familiar and historic examples.
And together we'll overcome our first barrier to being - our busy mind - by engaging our "being mind" through a mindful and self-compassionate practice. Together we will acknowledge, accept and bring presence.
Lektion 2
Toxic Overthinking To Cultivating Clarity
In Day 2 we look at the causes of our overthinking and ruminating minds, and the negative impact these habits can have on our brains and emotional wellbeing.
And to overcome this barrier to cultivating more clarity, we'll move out of 'our heads' and into our bodies, deepening non-judgmental awareness, connection and calm through a Body Scan.
Lektion 3
Stress Reactivity To Stress Resilience
In Day 3, we revisit our prehistoric roots to remember why we 'react' so powerfully and adversely to stress. And why this very reactivity inhibits our ability to make healthier responses. We simply don't have the 'space' to respond.
With the help of an inspiring quote and a Mindful Breath Awareness meditation, we'll calm our nervous system and learn why repeating this practice helps us find the space we need, to enhance our stress resilience.
Lektion 4
Scarce Time To Sacred Time
In Day 4, we bring awareness to how much value we attach to 'busyness', to striving for achievements and getting things done in life. And in contrast, what life might look like if our awareness and attention were more focused on what is happening now.
We contrast the feeling of a life of 'scarce time', with a life slowing down and sacred time. More 'now' time to invest in our happiness and wellbeing. We cultivate this intention together, in meditation.
Lektion 5
Ego-Driven To Awakened Connection
In Day 5, we begin with the story of a lost toy, symbolic of how over-identification with 'things', labels, beliefs and patterns of thinking, condition us for separation from the world. And disconnection from others.
How we all protect our ego-driven sense of self, with our habits and endless striving.
So instead we invite an intentional pause to meditate in the presence of our body, breath and the space around us. To help us move from ego-driven over-identification to cultivating more awakened connection.
Lektion 6
Being Separated To Being Interconnected
In Day 6, we strip back the layers of separation we might imagine exist, between us and those we share this wonderful world with.
And discuss how we are united by the things that appear to separate us - including our struggles, neurobiolological wiring and identities.
Together, we will overcome our final barrier to being - moving from being separated to being connected - by grounding in presence, sharing loving-kindness for ourselves and others and reflecting on the timeless things that weave us into one tapestry.

Another really good course by Derek. It finishes with a reminder that we are all interconnected with a simple Metta meditation. I finish the course again feeling deep gratitude for Derek, the insight timer community and to myself for having taken the steps to create a new way of being calm by making meditation a daily habit.

A beautifully guided and insightful course for regaining a sense of connection and joy through presence. Derek has a masterful way of articulating the barriers that keep us from ‘being’ and offers many wonderful, skilful ways to overcome them. The practices are perfectly aligned to the theme of each day, and delivered with tenderness, empathy and wisdom. Each of the 6 days are powerful sources of learning and reconnection. Days 5 & 6 in particular take us right to the heart and truth of our essential nature, why we cannot be anything other than intimately connected with each other, and helps us see through the illusion of the egoic mind.
