For thousands of years, ancient Taoist masters have studied and embodied principles found in nature to live a life closely aligned to a more natural easeful, and harmonious way of life. Water is a particularly prized element in Taoism. It can teach us valuable lessons on navigating life with greater ease and smoothness. In this course, you'll learn about the qualities of water from lessons found in the Tao te Ching by Sage Lao Tzu, along with commentaries from other spiritual masters and scholars. Some virtues gleaned from water include generosity, humility, non-contention, a low-profile approach, flexibility, and softness.
Ishar is a yoga and meditation teacher, author, and passionate spiritual practitioner. His teaching style combines an eclectic mix of influences, including Buddhism (Zen and Theravada), Yoga, Daoism, and natural observations. He invites you to incorporate the wise lessons from contemplative traditions into your life to create a more peaceful, harmonious, and happy life.

Lektion 1
Introduction: Daoism And Water
Welcome to this course! This lesson will cover the history of Daoism, its orienting principles, and some insights from Daoist masters over the centuries. Water is one prized element for Daoist sages for its adaptability, humility, softness, persistence, and generosity. By incorporating some of these virtues of water into our own lives, we can experience life with more peace and non-resistance. The following lessons will expand on these virtues.
Lektion 2
Water Flows Downward: The Low Vs. High Profile
This lesson explores the first few virtues of water: humility, maintaining a low profile, and non-contention, as expressed in the way water naturally flows downward to the lowest point. Verses 8 and 66 of the Tao Te Ching are referenced in this track.
Lektion 3
The Virtue Of Non-Contention
This lesson expands upon the virtue of non-contention, which allows you to navigate through the world smoothly and with less resistance. This track will also cover its opposite quality of contention (and some of its drawbacks), the principle of formlessness and non-doing, and the emergence of two ways of orienting in the world. Verses 8, 24, and 68 of the Tao Te Ching are mentioned in this track.
Lektion 4
The Soft Power Of Water
This lesson goes over a valuable virtue found in water - its softness. For such a soft or weak element, water can wear down the hardest substances such as rocks and mountains. Water also conforms to whatever container it is placed in whether a glass, bottle, or teapot; teaching us about flexibility and versatility. Water can also teach us about the virtues of being flexible and yielding (providing its counterexample of being stiff and rigid). Verses 76 and 78 of the Tao te Ching are referenced in this track.
Lektion 5
Conclusion: Putting The Principles Into Practice!
This track discusses how some of these principles learned so far may seem counter-intuitive at first due to worldly conditioning. However, if these principles are diligently practiced, you may observe profound changes in your life that various spiritual teachers often point to. Verse 41 in the Tao Te Ching is referenced in this talk. I'd like to thank you for taking this course!

I’ve scratched the surface in the past through other courses but always need and seek more. I’m still very much a beginner! This course offered valuable insights and I would welcome more material or I may revisit as the concepts can be simple but oh so profound and challenging to live into. Thank you! 🙏🏼
